Blob Eye Sti

Hello virgin poster :afro:

I have a few questions about the above car 03/04 model
Im thinking of buying one and been looking at a few for sale etc

Are there any know expensive to repair problems with these years? Lke gearbox, diff etc
Can they take some abuse....like track days?
I think they are 265bhp.... is there much involved in getting them over 300bhp?
Is the turbo lag really bad on the irish cars...single scroll?
And finally..lol.... how can I tell the difference between a jap and irish spec blob eye from looking at pics? They seem mostly to be Irish/UK models....I think

Anyway if someone can answer those questions it would be great,i've searched in google but there seems so many different variations between years and models I can't get a direct answer

Thanks :undecided: :afro:

Jap spec has different clocks, HID headlights with no orange indicator, twin scroll turbo, equal length headers, the 03-04 japs have DCCD also (all 05 have it with the widetrack) I have a type UK that is 300+ with just a full exhaust, air filter and map. It has been around the nurburgring so can handle some full on driving, as in any car, if properly looked after it will be fine. Buy the right one it will be grand.
Great car.
Stick the links up of ones you are thinking of and lads here will advise.

In the 03/04, the jap would be the one I'd go for, 6 speed with dccd is capable of holding big power, won't cause you any trouble unless it has been absolutely abused. 280bhp standard, on the twin scroll a simple remap will see over 300, few straight forward mods will see 330+. Car are very driveable, no turbo lag to speak of, you just need to be in the right gear. They will stick track days no bother, good pads, fluid and braided lines and you'll be flying. Regularly change the oil and you won't have a problem.

The UK version has no dccd until you get to the 2005 wide track model, the gearbox is still very strong but not as strong as the dccd model. Pretty similar power wise but the jap twin scroll is a bit more capable and has quicker pickup.

The easiest way to identify a jap or uk is the headlights, the uk version has orange inserts in the headlights for the indicators. Some people take these out though or replace with jap spec headlights. But easiest way to tell is if they've a picture of the interior showing the centre console and you'll see whether or not it has dccd

Welcome on board. Don't own an STI myself but in terms of being able to take abuse, I'd say it can but make sure you budget to keep it right. As said above, buying the right one is a start but it needs to be maintained right after that. 300bhp should be easy enough and it'll take track days no problem

Thanks for that, makes it a bit clearer. The JDM blobeyes seem rare enough, well all the ones i've seen for sale look like Irish ones.No problem maintaning it,just don't want to be afraid to drive it in case I break it  Won't bebuying for another month or so,might throw up the links then with more questions!
Im not totally sold on the looks but its growing on me lately, used to prefer the classic shape but getting hard to find a nice one of those now seeing their age!

@ op , post up an add for a car your intrested in and let the lads on here knitpick any problems with it . bar that kep your eye on here as most members cars here are well looked after as we're nearly all enthuasiasts on here

 :subaru:

Robbie whats different about the DCCD box that makes it stronger than a non DCCD box? First ive heard of it??????????????????????????????
You will find it alot easier to find a good UK Sti, gonna be hard to find a jap. and harder again to find a clean good ,
You will have no lag with any standard turbo sti, only when bigger turbos are fitted that the power band goes up a bit in the rev range, but as said above use your gears and it wont be an issue.
My 03 Blob Uk has a full system and induction, mapped in Scoobyclinic and i think the print out is 310 or 320, so plenty of scope in them to get a few more ponies.
I would buy either Jap or Uk, wouldnt really bother me, if going Jap i would like something a bit different like a Spec C but the ONLY...ONLY Thing i wouldnt like about the Jap is the twinscroll, i love the scooby sound, if i didnt id buy an Evo.
They are a robust machine, just watch for the usual things, like notchy gears... pay attention for clutch aswell and dont be afraid to test it.. Tired disks and pads will add up aswell so watch for them and knock them off your buying price. They are cheap to service and maintain in fairness to them, no more expensive than any good car.. and havent got stupid short service intervals like an EVO.
As with any car, take as much notice of the seller as the car, be opened minded and dont beleive everything your told, unless you get Service history from a Garage that can be trusted.. which i doubt any will have now a days, have few quid in stash and if not 100% sure, do your timing belt... very easy for someone to print a sticker or tip ex it onto the Timing cover.. Best of luck

Its the centre diff in them that is the difference Ken. They have been known to let go over in the UK, and I had a non-dccd box (although it was from a bug) and that went as well. I'm not saying the non-dccd box is weak by any stretch, its just that the plated centre diff used in the dccd is stronger.

Yeah i think the weakness is in the early Bug 6spds, nothing to do with Dccd do afaik, later blob boxes whether with Dccd or not have a different type Diff

Thats correct about the bug boxes, the non dccd bug box was particularly weak, especially the open front diff.

It still stands true to the blob boxes but the non dccd blob box is still very strong, just not as strong as the dccd box.

Every new model had a different spec of diffs, etc, I think there are at least 10 different types of 6 speed box available, spec c boxes are strongest of all with helical front diff's as well over the standard sti and genuine plated rear diffs also.

Thanks for the info all

Going by prices it will be a 03/04 blobeye. So non dccd, most likely non jap as I don't see any for sale.I was thinking the dccd was going to be one of those things that I will never really use and just another expense to go wrong anyway but if its robust and reliable thats good to know in case I splash out on 05 on model.

I don't plan on big power but down the line maybe around 330bhp ish would be good.

If you are considering an 05 model, then thats the one to go for if you can. Better all round car with wide track and much stronger hubs/bearings with the 5x114 setup

Hey Sweetcakes, here a question for you and it relates to your comment at the start of this topic. Can all twin scroll turbos 280 bhp (in my 05 Legacy 2.0GT-SpecB) be remapped up to +300bhp, and then what are the simple mods to bring it up further to +330bhp? Dont mean to hijack the discussion.

I'm not sure what your turbo is capable of to be honest, at 276 standard, a good remap with stage 1 mods on E5 should see you on the north side of 300bhp. I would say that would be in or around the limit of the turbo though, compared to the Impreza twin scroll turbo's which are bigger and better performing. 330 would involve changing the turbo/manifold/downpipe I believe for an impreza setup. Not massively complicated but would be expensive enough to buy the parts as the are high in demand.

They can be mapped alright as far as i know, Altezza Dan from the club got his 04 legacy mapped by Joe Power who is working out of Couture Auto at the minute, but the results wouldn't be relevant to yours as he had done a spec c turbo conversion by the time he mapped it. I'm sure he'll be along to fill you in a bit more.

A map with stage 1 mods would transform the car though, thats what I'd do if I were you
