Buying a car from uk...

20VBZR

Petrolheads
lads,

mate of mine is buying a 97 porsche boxster either from the north or england in the next week or 2. just wondering whats the story with the issue of salted roads over there? iv heard it can ruin the underside of the car if not treated properly? what to look for when checking it out?

any help appreciated

and yes iv tried to get him 2 buy a scooby but hes not having any of it.. some people! :dontknow:

You've pretty much got it covered there, salted roads are hard on the underside.

Best to get it up on ramps & have a good poke about for rust before buying. Get an HPI check done too, will show if any write-offs recorded on it or any outstanding finance.

Cheers Brian

So its just rust on the underbody that the salt would cause? yea told him to do the hpi check aswell

Depends where in the UK the car is coming from... further north, colder weather, more salting.... warmer south climate is much better place to buy from regarding this problem! I've seen a 4 year BMW that was rotten underneath coz of it... yet my 19 yr Mk1 MR2 is mint underneath and was a southern UK car up to 3 years ago when I imported it! :ponder:

I lived in jersey, channel islands for a while, to maintain the anti-corrosion part of the subaru warranty u had to have the underside treated by them yearly, dont know if they insisted on this in the UK or if other makes did it. If u have the service book it should have been stamped if rust proofing was carried out

Its all a bit of a myth that the salt on uk roads destroys cars. If you look at any 10yr old car in ireland and compare a 10yr old car in uk the uk one will always be the better car. The pot holes and poor roads here destroy suspension and running gear. I have never owner a uk car (out of over 30) that has had a problem with rusting underneath.

another thing to check with uk cars is the radiator they tend to rust easy, and then get blocked which results in overheating...

Its a little off topic (sorry lad) but just wondering, would this then fall into the new ridiculous carbon-based tax bracket?

Only 2008 cars registered after it came in before the summer ar affected Derek :) So once your importing a pre 08 car its grand.

i thought that it was all cars reg'd, new or used? I'll never get this... :wall:

It was originally suppose to be that way, but then they changed it again, its only 2008 cars on up.

Regards,
Steve.

Yep... definatetly only new cars registered as of 1st July 2008. :angry1:

Sorry... it is new O2 VRT rate on older stuff too but new tax is only on new as of JUly 2008. The difference on an older car thats got a high o2 level is minimal.... paid only a couple of hundred extra on a 7k pajero as it was imported after the 1st of July rather than before!! Not worth fretting over!
