CAMBELT NEED ADVICE

gc8aido

Petrolheads
My Type R has 92k on her and has never had the cambelt changed.

Where is good to go and how much you talking for it to be done.

Would it need new tensioner/pulleys? and would it be best practice to change the oil pump and water pump whilst its being done?

I was considering buying the cambelt kit for her and sending her into my mechanic but unsure as whether hes framiliar with STI's.

Safer to go with specialist? Do you know of anyone? Also, thinking of an induction kit and maybe de-cat to bring up the poke, any

suggestions for increasing performance without having to re-mortgage?

Id appreciate any help as this is my first Subaru and want to have her mint without spending a bomb on rogue mechanics.

Thanks

Yup just contact a trader mate. You won't be able to pm until you are a full member, so drop them an email or a call.

As for performance, stage 1, fuel pump, plugs, induction, decat and a remap. Remap is very important, even without any mods, due to our s**t fuel. Again, Dave in STi Tuning will help with this. :)

Yeah i just realised i couldnt pm so posted it up on his site there.

Yeah i hear ye...fuel is ridiculous...best iv'e done is 312km to a full tank and i was driving conservatively for

roughly 180km!!!! Good man and thanks for that. Have a power fc (apexi) on its way so reckon as you said get it mapped regardless!!

Recently serviced her myself with changing sparks, oil etc (usual) and threw in some magnatec...What oil you reckon gives best

results?

Thats one thing but with the lower octane rating you could blow the engine if you drive her too hard!

As for oil, some lads swear by castrol magnatec others by Motul, its a preference thing really! Dave in STi Tuning will give you better advice on this!

And make sure to only use Maxol E5 petrol, nothing else!Or you can blow your engine.

Oh yeah, good man Stephen!! Forgot about that!

Aido, don't get too worried either, just take it handy while driving! Try keep her outta the high revs, you'll be fine!

Good advice so far from the lads there aido.

With a remap on the power FC you will get nearer 420km to a tank.

When I had my timing belt done I got the tensioners done at the same time. You can go with the upgraded oil pump if budget allows (always a very good idea) No need for water pump as its rare they break.

Nice work lads...ive tried to keep her in low revs but had a trip to offaly there 2 weeks ago and it drank the juice...

was doing 120km average at about 4k (ish) revs and could just feel her eating the stuff....Ill take her handy until get the cambelt done i suppose...

I reckon your right with the oil pump and tensioners, better to get them changed whilst accessible and sure better for the sake of it.

What's this about the maxol g5 petrol? Sorry lads but no idea what you mean? Feel a bit stupid...

Wealth of knowledge in here, just stressing out cos 1st proper machine and although the performance is lethal, i just dont want to be

pushing her and risking blowing the sh*t out of her!!!

Any recomms on brakes?

Just bought an Alpine IDA x100 stereo (ipod) with 4 channel (2600watt) amp and 12" sub woofer (1200watt) so im like a kid at the moment...

My brain is running away with stuff to do but the bank balance keeps me grounded!!!

maxol E5 fuel is 99ron so best for your car until you get it mapped.

and you wont need that amp and sub as all the noise you want is in the engine!

:icon_redface: Thanks for that....

Yeah the bumbling noise is sweet,

half the reason i wanted one...gonna get a de-cat so she'll be smashing single pane windows shortly!!!

HKS induction kit and HKS dump valve are on the cards but tend to be pricey...Failed the nct this morning on the suspension....Devastating!!!

Type r is pretty much the ultimate classic! a few special editions aside!
