Car trouble continues

Following on from my power steering pump failure the car blew a radiator hose while stuck in traffic on the M50 yesterday evening.(smoke out of the bonnet vent, very embarrassing)

So far this year the car has cost me 2000Euro in maintainance bills/repairs. Not a happy Impreza 2007 ownership. :(

The car has just over 80000 KM on it and its a 98.

I heard the radiator is week because it has plastic end tanks and hoses are week too.

Do things like these parts start to go around this time?

There must have been a lot of pressure in the system for the hose to blow... I don't want to compound your worries Andy but your head gasket(s) could be on its way rather than the radiator :( Also, to answer your question, yes the radiators are plastic in part and mine cracked last year - a new replacement wasn't too expensive, thanks to a forum member

the head gasket did cross my mind as soon as I saw the line of coolant trailing behind me! I checked the oil and there is no mayo. I have a new bottom rad hose ordered from subaru.

Let's hope its just the hose  damn these cars... they're awesome when they're running perfectly... but they break your heart so quickly when they let you down...

It's not too easy to check the head gaskets without removing the engine & when you're that far you might as well renew them anyway . You could test for leakage of combustion gases into the coolant by getting a garage to stick the probe of their emissions tester into the header tank (but not into the coolant) .

A cylinder leakage test could show if a bad gasket is allowing pressure into the cooling system .

I would say that your problem was likely a perished or damaged hose . If you had a bad head gasket it normally lets the water past the radiator cap when the system pressure gets over 0.9 bar (pressure is stamped on the rad cap !) .

I had a 98 turbo that i sold last year and the with 65000 miles on it and the hose went, got the hose off a subaru dealer and he had in it stock and all, he said that it was a common problem and that why he always keeps them in stock. then my radiator went, he said the lad the fitted it never bleed the system and air pushed through the weak point in the radiator, so make sure that it's done right mate sorry to hear about yours. by the way if the head is gone there should be gunk in the rad, you should see it on the cap when you take it of. :( Best of luck with it.

Also woulda taken this tragic event   as an excuse to upgrade to samco top and bottom hoses??

I would have, but my credit card statement says otherwise! LOL LOL

and can we stop all this head gasket talk please LOL LOL

will do. When I was stuck in the traffic it was coming on as normal. It always comes on when my FC Commander displays water temp as 92 degrees, then drops to 86 degrees, then fan switches off.
