catch tank

i understand the purpose of these is to remove oil vapour from the intake , can someone explain how oil is recirculated back into the intake and do these catch tanks make an improvement or are they just there to fancy up an engine bay. could this for instance lenghten the life of your maf sensor by removing the oily vapour or does it remove it from further in on the intake system. do you have to empty these tanks or do they recirculate the oil into a part of the engine where it should be. i thought i knew a bit about cars but since i joined here im deffo a novice .......any explanations keep them simple.......its all my brain can handle

are they any benefit........they seem cheap enough so it would be easilly affordable but im not into putting things on the car if they serve no purpose. any ideas at which point they fit onto the air intake?

They do serve a purpose, they keep the oil out,so that it does not mix through the intake chamber and cause detonation,as in mix with the air and fuel mixture.
But unless your running serious power i dont think it would be worth you while,or unless you are getting a serious amount of oil collecting around the intercooler etc etc,imop.... :ponder:

I have one of these myself and it took me a while to figure out where to put the tank, or where it would fit more like. And where to connect up as no instructions were supplied.
Its a bit difficult to explain, but if you follow the air intake after the filter box you see the maf sensor. Then keep following the pipework all the way to the turbo.

Now back track slightly until you see a black pipe(about 2cm diameter) kinda teed off the intake just before the turbo. Follow this black 2cm pipe and it should curve down towards the crankcase and meet with the engine block. Its kind of a 90 degree bend.

Basically remove this pipe once your sure its the right one(should have brownish oil sludge in it) and connect the 2 pipes to the catch can, one then goes to where one end of the black pipe was on the crankcase and the other goes to the intake just before the turbo where the other end of the black pipe was.

Its job is to stop the oil sludge returning into the turbo and engine. Better for the car. And also is supposed to help maf sensors i think even though the return is after the maf on the intake.

Ill take some pics over the weekend if your stuck

Its because of helpful peeps like this that I love this club :salute:

cheers lads........on my other car(saxo) there is a pipe comming from the rocker cover that goes into the induction pipe before the air inlet, this allways has an oily substance in it, i think its for warm gas to flow back into the inlet on cold mornings. so the catch tank allows the warm gas back into the inlet but not the sludge that comes with it, i think i have it now.

heyre actually to help lower emissions, i.e the sludge is supposed to be re-burned in the engine, but im sure the warm air bit is an advantage too

Yeah that sounds like the pipe where you'd fit a tank on your saxo alright.
Nice little upgrade to do on your Subaru for not much money. Something else to point at under the bonnet
