Celica 1.8vvti as a swap (is200 was a no go)

My brother had one of these , good on juice and pokey enough 2 BUT there is a notorious problem in the 1.8 vvti and i cant remember exactly what it was , the basically sh*t themselves . the brothers car was a low mileage , one lady owner stunning car without so much as a scratched alloy on it and for no apparent reason after 2 months the engine needed to be replaced , i'll ring him tomoro and find out exactly what failed as it was a common fault on irish cars at the time , leave it with me and i will ring ya when i find out

Re: Celica 1.8vvti as a swap (is200 was a no go)b

Had one for 3 years and never had a bit of trouble with it. Also had the 190 jap version for 2 years and again never had a bad issue with it. Both were 6 speed. The 140bph was ok on juice. There a lovely little car but wait till Tommy finds out what that fault was. I never had any issues with either of mine but I could have just been lucky.

As said above they're a lovely car but stay away from the VVT-I unless the engine has already been replaced by Toyota. The 140 bhp models drank oil and their seals went and also the head gaskets spontaneously imploded. They never give any sign they're gonna go, they just go, as quick as a light and sh*t themselves. Even ones with Full Toyota Service History did it. Toyota replaced all engines free of charge if the problem started to arise or did arise though.

The VVTL-I 190bhp didn't have this problem and I've heard they're better on juice than the 140bhp because you don't have to sit on the throttle as long as you would in the 140bhp when over-taking etc. I know of several 190bhp VVTL-I Celicas that got around the 700km mark for a full tank of petrol. :)

Big end failure due to oil starvation is what the brother was told , problem originated with one seal basically been eaten away and loosing oil that way ,

on sayin that once the new engine was inplace it was a sweet little car to drive and the 6 speed box was a nice touch for long journeys ,

173,000 miles on it, got it out of her eventually, not a hope of ever selling that on.. Think I'll just have to bite the bullet and trade it in a garage..

Got a phonecall from carzone today wanting to sell it for me.. €40.. Do people think it would be worth a punt to try get a cash sale?

Think you're right keith, fook it. Worth a punt for the sake of €40. Much better site with much better search options
