Clicking noise on 2nd gear

I was driving to work today in the morning and everything was fine until I stopped on the lights and then while on the 2nd gear the weird ticking noise was coming out. (quite loud) It's only on the 2nd gear and I could feel it on the gear knob as well.. My car sounds like a tractor :|

Please tell me it's nothing serious as I need my car so badly now, I just started my new job... :new_puppy_dog_eyes:

Sounds bad. I dont think gearboxes are supposed to make ticking noises

Yes.. no difference in selecting the gears.. just the funny tractor like noise tick tick tick tick tick :|

and ONLY on 2nd gear

OK.. so after I finished work, I drove to Mark Murphy in Cork and they told me.. my 2nd gear is fooked :angry1:
The noise is on every gear and on the neutral as well but not so loud as on the 2nd. It goes quiet once you apply the clutch.

So I have 2 options I think...

-rebuild it (cost they've told me is around 400-1000 EUR)
-buy and fit the 2nd hand gearbox.

which option's better? :|

Damn.. I'm fooked now.. as I need a car and I shouldn't drive it as the gearbox can go anytime :new_puppy_dog_eyes:

:icon_cry: :icon_cry: :icon_cry:

I feel your pain buddy.

Go second hand box with as low a mileage you can get.

They wont know the real extent of the damage until the gearbox is out and they break it open. Quicker to just take it out and replace with second hand.

Would be the perfect time to fit a 6 speed box if you're planning on keeping the car & are considering big power at some stage in the future

Yeah, was thinkin about it, but I don't have funds right now.. I would need to change the diff, prop shaft etc. too much hassle and expense for now.

When you have the box out, stick in a uk 5th

Pete.. that's a good idea, but again.. no time, no money. I need a quick fix here :(

buy a 3.9 ratio box and you won't have to change the rear diff

IMO...
recon the original box!!!!!
pot luck with second hand parts and could end up in same position next year!!!
at least you'll know the trye extent of damage and repair to the original!!!!

I'm thinking the same marko,

Will have to contact Mark Murphy Motors on Monday and discuss how long will that take etc.
They said they could rebuild my gearbox no problem..
but I'm a little afraid if the parts they're going to use will be genuine ones..
Are parts of type-r's gearboxes accesible in Ireland at all?

jesus tough luck peter i know what it feels like :angry1: i had my car a month and first gear went :icon_cry: if you need a car for work and you havent the money to fix the type r straight away you should park it up for awhile and buy a cheap yolk with an nct for 3 to 4 hundred euro to get you around.....

If you are going to rebuild, then it might be a good idea to talk to ciaran rs-ra... He knows a lad that rebuilds gearboxes, he just did one for Mark B4_RSK to... AFAIK, most garages just ship the boxes off to specialists and then charge you through the nose for it... Think you'd save yourself a lot of money by cutting out the middle man...

And like Marko says, at least you've got piece of mind with a rebuild, I had mine replaced with a second hand box and it only lasted 13 months before it went again

Actually i dont think i contradicted myself, i thought i was quite clear but i will clarify for your benefit... I said to talk to ciaran because ciaran would give him the lads name and number, just like he did for Mark and then Codders could then go and sort it out for himself, therefore cutting out the middle man... Nothing in it for Ciaran, just some good club spirit to pass on the information to help someone out. I hope this clarifies everything for you?

But "big thanks" for your constructive criticism, maybe next time if you don't understand or comprehend what someone is saying then you could phrase your reply in a question, pointing out where you lack understanding, so that person could then clarify their point rather than you just laughing at them simply because you don't understand what they were saying. Do you think that would be at all possible? Posts like yours above don't exactly encourage people to post up on the forum in case they get shot down like you have just tried to do to me here. People with something genuinely constructive to say might be easily be frightened off and i think someone of your stature in the club should know better.

There is a courier company advertising on 98fm about shipping pallets to the UK for €55-60 and the box should fit on the pallet. Anyone know the name of the company thats advertising?
