Colin McRae dies in Helicopter Crash

one in the trader at the moment, well they say its a series McRae anyway

Very sad time guys, some of the scooby net are thinking of  a drive in memory of colin

1992 was the last time Colin won a rally out right here in ireland, It was the ulster rally and his co driver was derek Ringer in the subaru legacy in the rothmans colours if i recall right. Now Im getting my mate to go through his rally pack for that year and get a list of the stages, just a thought if we wanted to do a drive and take in one of the rally stages central for every one to meet up.

defo think the stickers is a great idea

Heaven aint going to be quiet anymore, Bertie, Richard and now Colin on the start lines, RIP

Just back from Glasgow myself late last night, found out in a shop yesterday morning on the front page of all the papers - Everybody in the shop stopped what they were doing to talk about it, a really touching moment and probably even worse for the Scots, him being a local hero.
He is certainly the reason I am a rallying & Subaru fan. RIP Colin - my thoughts are with you and your family.

My deepest condolences to Colins wife and daughter for their huge loss.
They have lost a lot more than a motorsport legend.

RIP

Colin McRae's Family Statement!

Sunday 16th September 2007
STATEMENT ISSUED ON BEHALF OF COLIN McRAE’S FAMILY

Speaking on behalf of the whole family, Colin’s father, Jim McRae, said today:

“It is with much sadness and regret that we have to make this statement.

It is unbelievable that Colin and Johnny’s lives have been taken so prematurely and in such a tragic manner.

Colin was a great son, a loving husband to Alison and a fantastic father to Johnny and his big sister Hollie. Johnny was a great wee guy, spending every spare minute with his dad, and even at this early stage it looked like he had the potential to carry on the family dynasty.

Our thoughts are also very much with the families of Ben Porcelli and Graeme Duncan. Ben was a great buddy of Johnny’s and they had always spent a lot of time together both in and out of school. Graeme, who now resides in France, had been a close friend of Colin’s since their schooldays and was back in Lanark on holiday.

We are thankful for the overwhelming number of messages of support we have received from all around the world. Colin was very much an inspiration and role model to motorsport fans the world over.

As you can imagine this is a very difficult time for the family and we would ask that our privacy be respected and we be allowed to grieve in private.”

RIP Colin!

What a sad day for motorsport, Colin was truely a gent and an extremely talented driver. If I could ever be only 10% as good as he was at rallying I would be happy. I first remember seeing him drive way back when he had the Legacys and Sierras and he was partly the reason why I fell inlove with the Legacy RS and spent so long looking for one, The other person responsible was Bertie and he too was unfortunately taken from us in a similar fashion.

Rallying is gonna have a massive void with out the "Great Colin Mcrae" and his presence will be sorely missed in the world of motorsports.

I would like to extend my deepest sympathies to all his family and to the other families involved. I will in his honour be putting some kind of rememberance to him on my rallycar for the Cork 20.

All I can say is that there is some entry for the great rally in the sky with Colin Mcrae, Frank Meagher, Bertie Fisher, Tony Pond, Richard Burns and countless others all competing. I'm looking forward to the day I can spectate.

May the road rise to meet you Colin and may you keep it flat to the floor all the way.

Sleep well Colin

What a tragedy! I first saw the awful news when I looked at this thread on Saturday night and stayed up into the early hours of Sunday morning, hoping that it wouldn't be him, but fearing that it had to be, watching videos of him racing and taking a measure or two of single malt.

RIP Colin, you were the best!

There's a black ribbon tied to the grille of my Legacy for him, and I see from YouTube that Subaru drivers in Poland are going to stick a black strap with his name into the front lamp of their cars (though not quite sure exactly what they mean?)

total tragedy, massive loss to his family and world of motorsport
RIP Colin , true legend in your lifetime

Colin Mc Rae subaru staements

Subaru World Rally Team managing director, Richard Taylor:
"All of us at the Subaru World Rally Team are shocked and upset by the tragic news of Colin McRae's death, which was announced on Sunday. Colin was Subaru's first World Champion and a man who almost single-handedly brought the sport of rallying to the attention of millions around the world. He was an inspiration to motorsport fans and remained a close friend to many of us in the team. At this terribly sad time our thoughts are with his wife, Alison, and the rest of Colin's family."

Prodrive chairman, David Richards:
“Colin was an amazingly talented driver. He had a passion and commitment for the sport which I have rarely seen in anyone else. You knew that whenever he got behind the wheel of a car that he would extract every ounce of its performance. And it was this all or nothing approach to driving that won him so many fans.

“Despite his success he always remained a very approachable person, someone who would always take time to talk to his fans and who continued to support the sport which brought him his fame.

“On a personal note he was also great friend. I have known him for more than 20 years since he was a teenager, sitting in the service park watching his father Jimmy compete in one of our Porsche rally cars. While it is a very sad day for motorsport, we should remember that Colin was a family man and I know I can speak for everyone at Prodrive and Subaru when I say that all our thoughts are with his wife and family at this very sad time.”

Well done Subaru he will be missed

colin was an absolute legend. he is the man that put subaru on the map. he will not be forgotten. R I P

Grist: It was an honour to partner Colin.

McRae's former partner pays respects to 1995 WRC champion.

Nicky Grist says the time he spent alongside Colin McRae on special stages all over the world were the 'best times of his life' as the Welshman comes to terms with the news that the 1995 WRCchampion has died following a helicopter accident close to his Scottish home.

Grist, who also read the notes for Juha Kankkunen during his career, took 17 WRC victories alongside McRae during their time with both Subaru and Ford as the pair struck up one of the most well-known partnerships on the rallying scene.

Although they did split briefly during the 2002 season, they re-united for future WRC events with both Skoda and Citroen and Grist admitted that he was honoured to have sat alongside the Scot.

"I have to say they were the best times of my life," he told icWales. "We used to drive to the max and push everything to the absolute limit. But when it came to socialising we had great fun also.

"Colin was always regarded as being a bit of a risk-taker in cars, but when it came to flying a helicopter he was a totally different man. The one thing he always told me, he said, 'You don't mess about with a helicopter. They are bigger and better than I am and you have to drive them as such'.

"At the end of the day, as co-driver for Colin I felt like one of the chosen few, and it was a great honour – one of the greatest of my life."

Grist added that McRae will be forever remembered as one of the most exciting drivers ever to grace the WRC and said he had no doubt that McRae's son Johnny would have gone on to follow in his father's illustrious footsteps.

"He was one of the most exciting and exhilarating drivers," he said. "He could turn on the extra speed just when it was needed to grab extra seconds to win the rally, and he was also one of the fans' favourites. Whenever we were at a rally you would always see millions of Scottish flags there for him. He was exhilarating to watch and he will be sorely missed.

"Not only is it a tragedy for the sport, but for his wife, who's not only lost a husband, but has lost a son in the accident too. Johnny adored his father and loved everything about cars. I am sure he was the new rally driver for the McRae family."

from prodrive

Along with the rest of the motorsport world, Prodrive has been stunned by the sudden and tragic death of Colin McRae. Colin competed for the Prodrive-run Subaru World Rally Team from 1991 to 1998, winning the World Rally Championship in 1995.
Staff at the company have created a book of condolence to express their personal thoughts about Colin, who had become a close personal friend of many of the team. With so many fans in the UK, the company has decided to open this book to anyone wanting to express their own thoughts. Once complete, it will be forwarded on to the McRae family.
David Richards, Prodrive chairman said: “Colin was an amazingly talented driver. He had a passion and commitment for the sport which I have rarely seen in anyone else. You knew that whenever he got behind the wheel of a car that he would extract every ounce of its performance. And it was this all or nothing approach to driving that won him so many fans.”

The book will reside in the company’s heritage centre, which includes the group A Subaru Impreza Colin drove to victory in the 1996 Catalyuna Rally. Fans are welcome to visit the Banbury headquarters to write their thoughts in the book and to view the heritage collection of cars at the same time. The book will be open from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday.
