Is it bad thing to have Compressor Surge on a subaru as i love the sound Plus if it is not a bad thing how to i accquire it :hammerhead:

Ok.So no one else has bitten . Do you mean a blow off valve (BOV)? :dontknow: If so,lots of good ones out there(HKS,Forge etc) but don't offer any performance advatage as far as i know, just sound good.

I think he is talking about that other noise. At a stage my hks BOV want working and was getting compressor surge. Its a completely different noise than a bov

Type it in on youtube and i think its an s15 with the bonnet off and you will see what i mean

hmm its a bit of a minefield this one....
and goes under many many different names ....
compressor stall , pigeon mod , turbo chatter , blocked recirc pipe....

few ways to achieve it too , one is a BOV with a stiff spring , so under low boost the charge of air wont have sufficient pressure to open the spring in the BOV , and as such will get dumped back across the turbo ... the air hitting the turbo fins and slowing them down is what causes the trademark flutter sound ....

And seeing as SR20 motors don't react well with BOV's many of their owners use a blocked recirc pipe , to achieve the same effect ...

dont have a clue if its any good for a subaru motors , id would probably say not .... but it cant be any more harm than anti-lag and look at the amount of members who have that installed

I could be wrong but Id say it would cause the turbo to wear excessively. Also id say it would cause havock with Turbo lag since your no longer letting it spool between gear changes?

yeah all that excess vibration and buffeting of the turbo would cause the bearings to wear out a lot sooner than expected etc...

estimates have put it down to reducing the life of a turbo by 20% , but not much research has been done on the matter ....

The MK II Focus RS has serious wastegate flutter or compressor surge as its more accurately called. The engineers designed it in to give more drama on sudden throttle lift off. I t does no harm to the turbo provided it is not excessive. I drove a modded Scooby with compressor surge and it was a great noise but the engine suffered huge turbo lag and the noise was quite loud and I would imagine the novelty would quickly wear thin. You would be better off with an adjustable blow off valve called a split R for Split recirculation. Forge do a very well made one.
