Considering wrap again!

So need to do something with my paint as it needs some TLC but probably full respray is the only way to get good results. Trawling the various legacy forums there is a few guys that have used 3M 1080 vinyl to do full car wraps.

First one here using a brushed steel finish:

and another one from down under with matt dark grey, which i think looks better

You can get enough to do the whole car for about $600, and but would probably take a few weekends of patience to do right! Something different i think anyway, i wonder how easy it is to maintain and how long it would last.

is it the matt finish you are after??

not a fan of matt wraps at all, i wouldn't consider one unless there is a gloss type of vinyl, that looks like proper paint.

i dont think you can beat a nice shiny car

i saw a matt M3 at prodrift once, i thought it just looked ridiculous

thats my honest opinion of them :dontknow:

ye if i was going for vinyl wrap it would have to be matt, i was thinking matt black but i think the greys look nicer.

I saw an E46 3 series today with a dark matt grey. It looked lovely. Have you considered plasti-dipping it 1st and see how it turns out?

are you thinking of doing the wrap yourself?

i was thinking about it. paying someone to do it would add about a grand onto the cost probably

@Bonito, considered plastidip, but not as durable and doesnt look as good

That's good advice.

You may be able to get the materials for 600$ but you will also need about 300euro worth of tools.
You will also need a spotlessly clean indoor area with good heat and plenty of space around the car.

If your paint is bad the wrap will only show up the bad bits and the wrap will not stick too well to bad paint.

The brushed finishes are tricky enough to do. You have to make sure the brush finish all goes the one way or it will look bad.

The 3m 1080 is suppose to last up to 12 years but 3m only guarantee it for 2 years.

Dan if your going down the wrapping road give these lads a call, they have a place in walkinstown where vison fx use to be right beside murry motors they have a great selection of wraps and at great prices, also they will give you some help and tips to do it all yourself

no bother they also have sample packs of different designs i think for a tener so at least you can take some home and have a good think about your choice

I wouldn't waste any money wrapping a car Dan unless for advertising/branding puposes of course.

It's just not as durable as paint... it marks badly and can't be polished out like paint. Bird sh*t can stain it along with alot of other things... If it's a daily driver i think it'll look tatty within no time. For show cars and countries with better climates/roads its not a bad idea.

I'd hold off... save up... and pay for a decent respray instead unless you have your mind set on the matt finish.
