I'm thinking of selling my type R and going Diesel

YEAH RIGHT!!!!!!!!!! :multijump:

My Uncle is looking for a diesel. He has a 2008 1.4 Mazda 3 and its a pig on petrol. I'm not sure of budget but probably around 10K .

Requirements?
1) "which ever is the cheapest to run year after year"
2) used
3) hatchback
4) cheapest motor tax

Any suggestions lads?

thanks.

2008 on Focus 1.6TDCi. 50-55mpg depending on the right foot..

Or if he wanted to go smaller, 08 fiesta 1.4tdci.. The woman has one and its doing a genuine 58mpg and thats pushing it at high speed up and down the M50 so could do 60+ otherwise. Good room in it too, I drive it often enough loaded with herself and the 2 boys and all their crap

We got a 07 diesel astra 1.7 cdti last year and its very easy on stuff and small tax and loads of power. I was told by my friend not 2 buy the 1.6 diesel focus cause it was a bad engine and that the 1.8 was a far better car and easier on stuff so tats all i know

What about the Impreza diesel. A mate of mine has one and it's a beautiful car to drive. It's also not a million miles away from what he's driving at the minute looks wise.

the focus 1.6 is a pile of sh*t i know i work on the cunts every day 1.8 and 2.0 are excellent cars by far the best family car on the market but also for a driver who likes a blast down a back road they handle extremely well and are very well built would reccomend one to anybody in the market for a diesel, also as robbie says if lookin smaller the fiesta is a very good little car

I've completely gone off diesels, they give their fair share of trouble. If he buys a petrol civic it'll still do 44mpg and what he spends on fuel he'll save on parts and have no hassle.

im sure dec will confirm this robbie a mate of mins got one for his girlfriend and the turbo packed up a while after having it,apparently the oil feed pipe becomes locked and wrecked the turbo,i'm not sure if its a common problem but going by that i'd defo stay clear

Thanks for the replies lads. I was thinking Focus/Mondeo/Golf myself.

Eric, I don't think an Impreza would be his thing or suit his image but I'll mention it.

Whats the motor tax system like on diesels? I have no clue.

That's a problem alright when they are not serviced correctly. They are Peugeot engines and need to be serviced with a low sulphur oil as standard oil causes those blockages. That's quite common alright now that you mention it, but its the same for the 1.4 and 2.0 tdci engines. The 1.8 is the only one that ford actually make themselves.

@andy ford wise, the 1.4 and 1.6 focus/fiesta are in the lowest tax band, the 1.8 is in the second but you'll struggle to get one in the south. 2.0 mondeo is in the 3rd tax bracket.

Relative of mine bought some form of a hatchback Peugeot, think it could be a 307? its a 2011 car anyway, the thing is doing crazy miles per Gallon, think its 1.4 diesel. I think its doing @60 to the Gallon or something

Great lads....keep them coming.

So 1.8 probably best engine to go for as regards the Ford?

Any suggestions as regards a Jeep/4X4/SUV?

Grand vitara diesel not that hard to run mate had one for 4 years only problem it ever gave wad the cat shattered and blocked the exhaust
40mpg I'm told in a 4x4

thats part of the problem the oil pumps give bother on them also and in this case they will lose oil pressure and the turbo has a lose fitting sleeve bearing that is fed high pressure oil the make up the bearing gap, if the pressure drops the turbo shaft makes contact with the sleeve bearing and it shits its itself

even though ford use a lot of peugeot engines the only one iv seen giving any trouble is the 1.6 the 2.0 and 1.4 are good engines but you are right rob that they need proper servicing with good oil ,the 1,8 has been dropped by ford due not being able to pass euro 5 emmission level so only the 2.0 and 1.6 available now

How much do diesels really save you? considering the loss you make selling your own car, the fact diesel is more expensive and the fact that turbo diesels are not as reliable...if you're in the market for new car it makes more sense, but switching from a used to used of similar year you would need to be doing a sh*t load of miles to justify it financially..I odubt very much he'll go from a 2008 petrol 323 to a 2008 Focus diesel with having to stump up a few extra grand

Ah yes a few grand would probably have to be included as the 2008 Mazda 3s are only going for between 7 and 8k with.

good point above about the petrol. the Mrs fiesta zetec petrol gives 43mpg. corolla or similar will give the same. for the sake of getting up to a modern diesel that'll do 50+ mpg you'd have to shell out a bit. used petrols are undervalued in the market in my opinion. then there's the danger of buying a fussy common rail diesel that run on washed diesel and is a time bomb waiting to go off
