was jus over on snet and came across this and thought id share .

I test drove my first subaru impreza sti with prodrive a few hours ago
now, I have been driving hot hatches for years, which include astra vxr's, clio sports and civic type r's.
The astra probably topped the pile with roughly 250hp, I had a full miltek exhaust system fitted. This was fast but I thought it should be quicker.
So what was I expecting from a 305hp scooby... I was predicting alot of power and grip to be honest...

Started off steady of course, as I haven't ever drove a 4 door car before. It felt rather big

Stuck to 30mph for a couple of minutes, until the guy told me to take this side road - national speed limits narrow, bendy roads.

Right, put my foot down

I actually slightly sh@te myself with a large hint of panic. My first impression was I was in rollercoater on a road. The grip, I couldn't believe the control of the thing!! I am finding the words hard to find, in what I experienced this evening....

Mind blowing, scary, excited, power, unbelieveable, control and maybe sheer fear

So I thought I would put myself through it again. Stuck a deposit down and I pick her up monday :luvl ove:

Good to be part of the family guys and girls.

had a similar experience myself , having driven a 1.0 l seat ibiza for four years , i went to look at a "bug sti" and was a bit afraid when offered a test drive . two minutes later , i knew even though i couldnt really afford , i had to have it !!
and a happy member of the isdc family since

thanks

i will never forget the 1st time i test drove my WRX Prodrive.. my heart was racing and my hands shaking afterwards! I just couldnt believe the car... its was Crazy!

When i take someone for a spin their hair is standing on there necks and arms and starting to breath very fast not able to talk. they cant believe the power and how it keeps going faster and faster..
they holding on to there sits shouting oh jesus F**K, S**t.. its funny to watch, but the 1st time i went for a spin in one i was extactly the same

Oh its great to say we have these cars!! :subaru:

Same as above, had driven a uk turbo, and had a spin in a grp n wrx. But my first spin driving a well sorted sti was our first type ra fresh off the docks, was something i'll never forget, that thing was ridiculously fast.

Only things i've driven near the same driving pleasure, are m3 evo and evo rs's for that stripped down raw drivers experience. Maybe i imagine it but apart from the driving feel i always associate jap imprezas with a certain interior smell as well. I really dont think for the money you can buy better performance.

Outright speed is boring after a while, point to point gets my vote. The only draw back with my current type ra is the ridiculously low 5th 120kmph is 4100rpm gets a bit weary on a long run

yeah i no that feeling first time i really pushed the impreza sti it gave me the shakes just didnt expect the power to be so great, previously owning a b4 before the sti i thought i was ready for the speed but i wasnt at all  :subaru:

the fastest car i had before my scoob was my 98 type r integra and that yoke was fast,,the day i went to the docks in dublin to collect her i didn't know wht to expect,,didn't get a right feel for it till we got to the toll bridge on the way down,my mate who brought me up was driving a 03 clk merc which was fairly rapid and when we got through the toll he gave me the sign ta go like fook,,the merc disappeared in the rear mirror and then bang,,,hit the limiter after about 14 seconds,,,never enjoyed the drive from dublin and never will!!! :subaru:

If you ever have to rebuild your gearbox for any reason, throw in a UK 5th. Just under 3k RPM at 120kph

Steve.

The first sti i drive was back in 05 , had driven wrx's before and wasnt expecting the sti to be much different , Boy was i wrong , i didnt wanna get out of it and truth be told the owner didnt want me back in it (sorry nick) have wanted one ever since but could never streach the budget far enough , or something else came up (house, then recession , then no job etc etc )

I remember after bringing my type ra home after i bought coming over the motorway i thn had to overtake a van i was gone and past in what felt like a second i had a 01 celica before this 1.8 vvti 140 bhp but it couldnt prepare me for the raw power of the ra but a year on and it still gives me that feeling when i floor it im a bit more used to it now though :subaru:

i no what you mean about getting use to the power. it doesnt suprise you anymore after a while cause you no wat to expect. then you start thinking about modding the engine to get the feeling you got when you first got into the car and floored it but thats an never ending black hole for money

remember it oh to well,in england on a b-road in the P1.never been in a car that could handle /grip so goooood

i remember hating scoobies as every tom dick and harry had one in the uk every night would say 10-20 on the roads and i was stupid enough to listen to other people say this that and everything bad about them then one day i saw an 2005 ex works wrx sti 400bhp for sale full rally colours and stickers and it caught my attention was getting a nice tasty cheque a few days later so i thought i would treat my self, in i went and had a look around it salesman smell money or blood came out and asked if i wanted a test drive, i took it out and christ never had so many emotions in one minute happy, scared, wft as mentioned above i thought i was on a rollercoaster from that moment on i knew it was a scooby or nothing for me the power the grip everything screamed buy me unfortunatly the day i got the cheque and went to pay for it the bugger had sold it half an hour before :icon_rolleyes:

I first had a 05 irish sti, and was very happy with it, but it wasnt quite as quick as I thought "A subaru" should be, it was standard 265 bhp.
I sold it due to horrendous weekly fuel costs (only car) about 6 months later an grabbed up a good value 03 jdm sti.

When i test drove it, my god, thats how a scooby should be. Balls to the wall fast, stuck to the road, sharp steering etc etc!
I had to have it!

So i bought it, and have it as a second car, and every time i get in it having got out of the transporter I go, Holy Shiiiiitt, this thing is crazy!

(running full 3' decat, induction kit, 255 fuel pump and re-map seeing 350-360 bhp)

350-360 bhp just from them mods thought it would be around the 330 mark but ur doing great if you got them up that high  and lucky fella having 2 cars. thats wat i aspire to have a daily driver then something fun for the weekends

Well when i got the car it has about 4 different dyno run print outs from different dates.
Each time an extra mod added.

The last dyno run saying 374bhp.
I think thats definately a little kind given its a standard vf37 (i think, but maybe its not) so i think its reasonable to say its making 350bhp anyway, could be 360.

I know all about it when i got my first scooby i had been driving a civic , tock out the scooby and what a differance got rid of the civic that week.
And never looked back. :subaru:

Very good stories! Great thread
First scooby I drove was a black '98 forester ST/B,
Anna had a 150bhp 2L 16V magane coupe (nippy little car) then we got 2 big dogs so she wanted a jeep so we were test driving Pajeros and landcruisers and the likes!
We looking at paying €1300 road tax for the SWB landcruiser auto we were about to buy at a jap import place, We saw the Foz in the corner,
We asked how much the road tax on that was, half that of the Landcruiser, Worth a test drive!
Out on the road, I put the foot down and the auto box dropped a gear and she pitched back on the soft standard suspension and took off like a slingshot!
I had never driven anything so fast, I giggled like a child for an hour after!, Anna was happy about the cheap tax, and I had something to play with!
Fozzies ever since!
