Engine knock

Hi lads just started too notice a little engine knock on the passenger side of my engine. After speaking to Dec about this knock I checked my oil and filter and found the dreaded glitter of death!

My last oil change was about 4000km with 5w30 castrol,I have since been told this was the cause of my problem and changed to 10w40 part synthetic but the harm seems to be done.
Just wondering would this oil be the cause of my problem or was it something else.
And if I'm looking at some kind of rebuild what kinda money am I looking at.
At the moment the car runs perfect apart from a little knock when warm at around 3000 Rpm there is no knock when cold.
The car is a Legecy GT BP5 twin scroll JDM 79000km on the clock no mods at all bog standard.
Any help or advice would be great I know I have poor Decs head wrecked so far:)

:icon_sad: not good man looks like you need new bearings at a min . Seems to be a lot of metal filings there . i wouldnt be driving it any more till its striped and fixed

As above.

Woukd not advise starting it again. Do further damage.

The BL5 legacy has oil pressure issues. Where either turbo failure or engine failure out of blue on low mileage cars. We have rebuilt a lot of them.

Ya it will be coming off the road now I don't want to do any more harm can't understand this wear with such low miles and not abused.

My turbo went 4000mk ago since been rebuilt and it's fine now but it wasn't an oil problem,it sucked in a lump of wire from the exhaust manifold.
Is a rebuild expensive Dave or what extent would it have too be done is it full or just rebuild what is damaged??

Didn't replace the oil pump just the manifold as that was where the problem came from,I think it was a wire seal from around the flexy joint.

your not wrecking my head at all man hope it can be sorted with out too much grief or cost its a pity cause the car is mint

Cheers Dec I'm just not getting much luck with it,I only done 7500 km since I got it and I have it 14 months and two mature owners on it before me,so from what I can see it was minded and had a life until now.

Seems to be a lot of issues with them. Engine and turbo failures seem related to oil starvation.

Oil pick up pipe cracks can also be an issue.

Adrian. Yes any rebuild is expensive. And then you need to strip it down first to see if there is any damage elsewhere besides crankshaft and conrod. i.e. piston or cylinder wall scoring, scoring on cam journal on head, etc.

im my opnion the 5w30 castrol had nothing to do with it to be honest dont know why that was said unless i'm missing something . regular oil and filter changes between 5-8 klm regardless of what oil was used on normal driving would be grand unless you were on a rallystage all the time between services.
it wont be a cheap fix either way adrian remove engine strip it inspect it try and find the cause of it going . then new bearing set at the very least hopefulluy no more damage done but oil pump, modine, gaskets put back together refit it . at a ball park figure your looking at between 2000- 2500 at a guess everything going well if you can do some of the work yourself the it would work out a good bit less giving someone the short block getting it done and putting it back in yourself or getting a long engine back :dontknow: .
have a chat with a few traders and they will give you a better idea of whats involved and the costs . hope this helps

hard luck alright, i'd say it was related to the turbo rebuild and bits got into the engine and have being doing damage since, Hopefully the block and heads are damaged free as that will take a bit of cost off having to get them repaired. some lads say its best to change oil pump and modine when turbo fails to help clear out any bits of metal in the engine. Been there before its a tough decision to make to spend the money getting it rebuilt or not. They have very skinny cast rods too that are a weak point when the power is upped

Ya Dan it could be a knock on effect after turbo I thought I was safe when I found all the bits of the turbo in the cat,but maybe something got into the engine.
Have been chatting some lads today about a rebuild I'm looking between 2000k and 2500k for the job!sick as a pig but could be worse it's all together and at its early stages I hope!

depends on whats being changed really but 1500 up to any price really on parts and your only scratching the surface. headgasket oil pump ,oil modine , gasket kit is between 900-1000 euros. bearing crank seals timingbelt the list is endless really shop around and see how you get on .

Ali Burrows Motirsport said he should get it done for around 1800 sterling that includes lifting and refitting the engine I know that's just a ball park price but it sounds quite good, that's not including timing belt kit but that is nearly due now anyways as there is 79000km on clock do no harm to get that done now.

That's a great price Adrian and another 300-350 for timing kit still not too bad once no damage has been done
