We were talking bout this at work today.
Il be in the uk, il have uk permanent address, uk bank account, uk national insurance and whatever else goes with it.

If i buy a uk plated car, how do i get it vrtd for free when i bring back home.
Heard about this before, but is this done and dusted years ago.

Anyone got the truth about how this works?

I thought it used to be that if you own it for 6months and have address etc as you've stated above then you can bring over and just pay for re reging to Irl plates, don't know if that was fact though.

ya Nic is right there... think you'd need proof of wages/income in uk also... not sure on what exactly whats needed but its a runner .. think you can only ever do it once though

Once would be enough for me gerry.

Anyone have a link from someone thats done it already lately.

I'm doing a job for a lady atm who's from the UK and it just so happens she's in the process of bringing over a jeep, will see if i can find out some info for you Sean.

Cheers Nick,

If iv done my sums right, il get all my lists done  i love lists.
But from what they were saying today, wel be able to claim all our uk tax back if we get this contract done with in the 9 months.
That has to get checked out yet but if its right, il be a happy man plus the free vrt

''What are the Residency Requirements?
For VRT purposes, you must have had your normal residence as defined below, outside the State at the time of transfer. In the case of a transfer from outside the EU, you must have had your normal residence outside the EU for a continuous period of at least 12 months prior to transfer.
''

Normal Residence means:

the place where you usually lived, for at least 185 days in the year ending on the date of transfer, because of occupational and personal ties
if you had no occupational ties, the place where you usually lived for at least 185 days in the year ending on the date of transfer, because of personal ties
if your occupational ties were in a different country from your personal ties then the country of your personal ties is taken as your normal residence if you returned there regularly (i.e. for most of your non-working days).

What evidence is required in respect of the Vehicle?
You are required to prove that you had possession of and actually used the vehicle abroad for at least 6 months before transfer and that the appropriate local taxes have been paid and not refunded. This proof will usually consist of:

the vehicle registration document
the certificate of insurance
the sales invoice, receipt of purchase or other similar document
evidence of the date on which the vehicle was brought into the State (e.g. sailing ticket)
You will also be required to produce evidence of use of the vehicle abroad. This evidence will consist of, for example:

service and maintenance records
fuel receipts
documentation that indicates that annual circulation and registration taxes have been paid etc.
such evidence as may be requested in individual cases.

I dont understand, do i have to live there for 12 months or 6 months?
Does the car have to be bought in the uk or car i buy a uk reg car here and take it over there, then bring it back when the 6months are done?
Can only do it once every 5 years and cant sell it for 12 months after its irish regd.

AFAIK Sean... you need to be living there 12 months with proof of salary being paid and utility bills. My sis and brother in law lived over in the UK and brought back an XC90 and 911 without having to pay the normal rate of VRT as they had lived there for just over a year. But they are strict and look for everything including the likes of your grocery bills!

Cheers lads, why couldnt they just put that down in these forms for thick people.

Il have 9months there with all the proof i need and that will probably lead in to another contract over there.
Well see when the time comes.

Would i have to be working 12 months there and then buy the car after that 12 months and wait another 6 months?

Or could i buy the car anytime with in the 1st 6 months and then just have to own the car for another 6 months and that would make up the 12 months?
If that makes sense.

Returned here with forester turbo in '05 from Jersey, as stated had to provide documents proving I had lived & worked there for longer than 12 months but also had to show that I had returned here intending to stay. So I had to show them mortgage details, utility bills, proof of employment here also, you can not sell on car either for a year or vrt will be liable

Cheers mark, should be a bit of craic, loving it already.

Up on a 10meter plylon all day today, im crippled now.
