Failed nct test

Hello Lads

My car failed the nct test this morning on the exhaust noise it gave a reading of 119.9db :icon_omg: is this reading correct for a 3 inch catback exhaust system with the bung in? I find it hard to believe it was that high of a reading. The two nct testers said they were surprised that it failed they said it was just as quiet as a normal car. It took them at least 10 mins to set that machine up for noise test and they were reading the manual for a while how to use it :icon_rolleyes: I suppose there is no point in complaining to nct customer service

Looks like i will have to put on oem catback exhaust :wall:

retest is free

Get back down there to them Mark & get it retested straight away.

Fooking clampets haven't a clue. Exposure to sound over 110db for more than a minute risks permanent hearing damage & your car is nothing like that. For example, a chain saw has a db reading of 108db

Look for a manager. Tell the manager that if the reading is correct that the staff members in question would be deaf by now.

Failing that give this number a call & lodge a complaint LoCall 1890 200 670. Its the NCT complaint line. Don't let them away with this :angry1:

Even if i went down again they would probably get out the manual to use it again :icon_rolleyes: I will try that number you put up

Thats the problem with the nct testers there not trained properly to use that equipment yet :wall:

I phoned the customer service and they told me to go down to test centre again and say it to them and if they dont do anything i have to fill out a form

Find it hard to believe they can fail you on a test that they obviously dont have the training to complete

I went down to the test centre and they told me thats the reading and they cant do no more , he then said that i had to resonator in the centre section. I told him there is and he insisted there was no resonator in centre pipe :icon_mad: The manager then said that they had a sti impreza for a test yesterday with a standard system and it was 92db thats more lies because the noise test only started from the 1st april :angry1:

Im going to send away a complaint form, It would be interesting to see how other members cars that are due for nct, will get on with the noise test

Im so p11sed off :angry1:

I know what your saying and i probably shouldnt have said that but there is no way that its 119.9db.

My guess is 119.9db is the maximum the machine will read and they haven't a clue what they are doing - probably reading the wrong figure from it!!

New logo for the nct???

Where are you based mate ? I have a DB Meter you can check it on if you are in Dublin.

Hi

Thanks for the offer

Im getting a standard catback system soon so it should be okay then

I wouldnt go changing over exhaust until you get it tested by someone else. That seems a very high reading.

I could get you access to a db meter if you would like to try a reading yourself. I'm in the Roscommon area if that suits any better. :dontknow:

Thanks anyway, but im getting a standard exhaust

I asked japspeed uk about the exhaust i have and they told me its 105db with the bung in so it wouldnt have passed anyway, nct reading is a good bit out.

I went for the nct visual retest this morning, and i had the standard exhaust system on, two of them came out to check the exhaust. he reved it up and the two of them were looking at each other discussing how loud it was, one of them wanted to bring it in for a paid retest thought it was a bit loud :icon_rolleyes: why did he phone head office in dublin when it was down on the letter as free visual retest being very annoying. It passed anyway for another 2 years
