Ford SMAX 1.8tdci vs 2ltr

A friend of mine is looking at buying an SMAX, he can't really stretch the budget to post 2008 and they are hard to get... So probably a 2007..
Which is the better engine the 1.8 or 2ltr diesels?? Is one more problematic than the other ?

2 litre is a good engine, ours has 312000 km on it no bother ever.
Brilliant car all round.

both are good engines and in Ireland the 1.8 is easier find also the fact he is looking for an 07 he will avoid the web-belt timing system that 08- 1.8 has

Has to be changed either 100 k miles or five years which ever comes first
