Front Shock nut sheared off

:angry:Well lads just looking for opinions, dropped my car in this morning to have the lowering springs fitted. They just rang me there to say that when they were removing the top hat from one of the shocks the bolt sheared off, all the rest were grand but that one sheared off. Result is I need a brand new shock at min 150 plus vat.
Here's the thing, is it my tough sh1t or do I have come back? They have basically said it ain't their fault, and I need to get the car going today for work.
I can't leave the car and argue about it cause work depends on me driving, serious pain in the hole.

Re: Broken shock

Ouch sorry to hear that, tricky one to prove alright. Will they be able to match the shock exactly thats in it? as far as i know those Bilstein shocks arent on any other legacy so if they put a shock in from Irish legacy it may not be the same and cause all sorts of weirdness with the handling

Re: Broken shock

If they are Bilstein shocks you have then that price is not for a genuine replacement. They are a lot more expensive than that.
I suspect having two different shocks on each side would not be great for the handling.

spot on.

Re: Broken shock

thats true lads, its a KYB replacement, but literally the car cannot drive without a shock, Ive just ordered a replacement Bilstein shock from Japan, but will take over a week to come in, car cant stay on the ramp for a full week, will do as an interim measure. Subaru Ireland do not have any in stock and actually have never ordered them at all so cant even give a price

Re: Broken shock

I'd billling the garage for the replacement. There is no reason on a car as new as yours that it couldn't have been removed without shearing it off. Any half decent mechanic would have had enough cope on to go easy on it or use penetrating fluid if it felt a little seized. If they damaged it due to some incompetent grease monkey mechanic... then they should foot the costs.

It's not a hard thing to proove it was there fault... they broke it. And as I said any decent mechanic wouldn't have! :angry1:

Can you get the damages shock and sheared off piece... I have someone who might be able to access the damage and tell you if it was a fatique fracture or just negligence on their behalf?

Re: Broken shock

I have the nut alright Jamie, basically they said that they used the air gun on all 4 corners, when they used it on that shock it literally sheared off straight away, it was the top nut that holds the top mount on

worst case, you could rent a small car for the week, to get you around. 20/30 quid a day. If Jamie knows someone that can prove it was their fault i would take them to the cleaners and make them pay for everything. Hope you get sorted asap.

Dave... was this when putting the nut back on or taking it off that they used the air gun???

Drop it into me if you can. I'll get it up to my mate to take a look at it.

Re: Broken shock

Let me know if you want me to get the borken part looked at. Spoke to mate and reckons it's doen't make sense that it would have snapped due to fatique or wear. Reckons it's more likely down to being bodged by mechanic.

Have the shocks ever being off the car before that you know of...?

Re: Broken shock

That side of the car has never been off since I had it, and had no Irish owners since it landed here. Could have been off the car over in Nip Land alright, will never know. Have the car back, driving perfectly thank god on the KYB shock, all fitted up nicely. No shudded, wheel is spot on straight, and handles just the same. Have the Bilstein shock ordered so shouldnt take too long to get here hopefully, will just swap it out then. Am very happy with the looks though, some drop! Defo needed it.

Jamie im probbably flogging a dead horse to be honest, he would never admit to being over zealous with the air gun, and I wasnt there when they were done so dont want to waste anyones time ya know

On a plus note! My front splitter just arrived!!!! Now to get it on!

Re: Broken shock

Car looks well Dave!

I understand you wanting to drop it... but it would be easy to tell if it was damaged through negligence.

It's a lot of money to have to fork out for someones else's mistake.

Your call though!

He has agreed to pay for the replacement shock, out of "goodwill, and to fit it when it arrives, so not costing me an extra thank god, really happy with the drop
