fuel saving

you could try and install one of them ecotek fuel saver devices ......
google em ,
im sceptical myself .... but a load of lads on midnightclub swear that their fuel consumption dropped between 10-15% when one was installed ....

How does that work?

sorry meant to say they are called supertech

and all information can be found on www.supertech.ie

bit of debate as to how they work , but the supposed fact is that they do ....
lads have put them in skylines , 180's , silvias , type R's , diesel Bmw's and they have all reported savings ...

i however will remain sceptical until i purchase one myself and see if it works

Right seeing as how you have the car now and are looking for genuine tips on fuel saving, Hers a couple I know of...
2. Fill your car up late at night or very early morning as its colder fuel condenses and you can fit more in the tank...better value for your fill.
3. More air in your tyres.
4. maintain more constant speed or use cruise control
5.keep windows up and avoid air con,
6. your right about servicing newer spark pulls and cleaner oil leads to a more efficient engine.

try drive a 2l turbo then you will see expensive to run
tell me about it  im bearly getting 170 miles to a full tank of juice.....
and thats driving it like an old granny....
I went from a 1.4 MK5 Golf to a WRX and its much better craic using a tank of fuel to do 350km rather than a dreary 650km, having said that I reckon a diesel hatch will be coming my way before the year is out. I have tried driving at 80kph and stayin in 5th gear wherever possible but it doesn't seem to make a bit of difference. I hate to say it but diesel seems like the way to go!

Also, you get better mpg from the first half of the tank so fill up when the tank is half empty

eh ... i dont know if you are serious , but isnt that because the top half of the tank contains more petrol than the bottom half ...

ie when the needle is showing half tank on the gauge ... that doesnt mean you have a half tank of gas ...
i always get 250-280 from top half of the tank , and about 150-160 from the bottom half ,
always assumed that the tank just held more in the top ....in all the cars i've had this was the case ,
maybe its just because i never drive till the light comes on ... i always fill up above the second last marker

I'd say you should get better mpg out of the bottom half of the tank owing to the fact that the car is lighter. Fuel saving top tip, take a dump before you leave the house, driver and hense car will be lighter still.

Hey robharrold2009,

Alot of us here at some stage drove / owned a 1.6ltr so we know where your coming from .

What mpg are you averaging at the mo and have you done any mods ie... exhaust / air filter etc......

If your mpg is a way out ............your either driving too hard :icon_biggrin: :icon_biggrin: or possibly a faulty sensor
and your car is simply over fueling .

What i noticed in the past, is that when i was trying in vain to keep up with the lads , i was burning almost the same amount of fuel
but when driving normal, it was almost as good as any 1.6ltr ...........( AWD would be a bit heavier on fuel )

Post up your mpg and we'll have a fair idea if it's correct or out a bit.

Best thing for saving fuel is keeping the rev's down

i think its because when it says full, you can fit a bit more in above the level and when needle is low, its not taking any reserve tank into account (if there is on in subarus) and it'll always say its lower than it actually is by design so you fill up before running dry and being stranded.

I’m serious alright, I read it somewhere before and I’m sure it’s been posted here at some stage too. It’s to do with evaporation IIRC. When the tank is emptier the fuel splashes around more therefore more evaporates than when it’s nearly full.

And I mean half as in the mathematical half (50%) as opposed to what the gauge tells you (i.e. in a 55L tank of petrol you will get more mpg from the first 27.5L than from the second).

that makes a bit of sense actually. always found petrol to last longer when you put in a full tank rather than equal value in €20 fills. :ponder:

Spot on you should always fill your car to the top, petrol evaporates in the tank

left my house this morning with little over quarter of a tank , drove to maynooth and back and red light didnt even come on ., so thats over 114 miles round trip on approx 14 litres or €17 of petrol at steady 100-120 kph ,

who says a subaru cant be fuel efficent ,

still want an sti tho

Got 35mpg out of my 1.6 last week but was only getting 29 during the frosty weather.
Used to get 33mpg out of my '01 leggy (straight 2 litre) on the same drive. (I should never have sold that car.)

I always fill to the top, the very top, and wait until the light is about to come on before i fill again.

I'd really love an sti but i think it will have to be a diesel for me the next time.......i just couldnt afford something around 27mpg for an everyday car.
