A couple of weeks ago, when I was filling up the petrol tank and I usually fill it right up to the top, the petrol started leaking out the other side of the filler pipe somewhere.
I looked up underneath, as well as I could, and it looked like it was coming out from higher up the pipe, around the same height as I was filling it in.
I spoke to my mechanic and he said that the filler pipe must have rusted and to try get a new one. In the meantime, he also said not to fill the car above the 3/4 mark. I have been doing that and a small bit, maybe 200ml, still leaks but the leaking stops when I stop filling up.
The oem part number is 42066FE090 for a 2007 hawkeye wagon.
Long story short is that the part is only orderable from a main dealer, but that doesn't really matter anyway because the part is discontinued (ref: Slatterys in Tipperary).
I'm not sure what to do. Should I try to have a look to make sure that it is the actual pipe that is rusted or the return pipe (which I think is made of rubber), and/or would I try and get a used one from a breaker?
I guess I'm wondering if these are known to rust over time and how do people fix them, given that you can't order a replacement.
Thanks,
Adrian.
