Garda Issue With Sticker Number Plates??

Big_Red

Middle Lane Hogs
I have a sticker number plate and a Garda recently pulled me over because of it, even though it is as big, if not bigger, then a regular number plate. I told him this, but, he wasn't interested. I also told him that another Garda (outside the Garda rowers club outside Chapelizod) said it was ok but apparently "No way, that's not true, no Garda would ever say that".

I have nothing against the Gardai and this is the first time I have ever been pulled over (I have the Scooby for nearly 2 years now) but I do find it hard to believe that one Garda may say one thing and another Garda another.

The issue was that the license plate was not angled properly, but there is nowhere in the Irish Standards which stated a license plates angle.

http://www.irishstatutebook.ie/1999/en/si/0432.html

Apparently, this is the standards when it comes to Irish license plates, and I would like to know if anyone else, who has a sticker license plate, has ever had hasstle with this?

If I am wrong then I will throw up my hands and say "OK I will change it", but I don't think I am.

Any other info would be great

I just want to know if I am right or not

Everyone knows that there is only one type of number plate that you will get no grief with and thats the normal plain jane, white reflective background, black normal writing plate that you either screw or stick to the car.. end of..
If you want to use some other type then 2 choices..... not listen to what he says and do your own thing or put standard plates on the car and move on :icon_rolleyes:

My one is the exact same as the number plate marked diagram 1. It is the same, if not bigger then that.

Here is a pic of it:

you posibly have a point technically , but visually and in mr garda's eyes its not standard and thats where the problem lies . not a threat to the countrys security but in this nanny state they want it their way or the highway !! :angry1:

clean lookin :subaru:

Vehicle registration plates must be affixed to the front and back of your vehicle and clearly visible at all times.

reason is numbers arent visible cos number plate is lying flat....

put a bracket on bumper and just fix normal plate there

Did you seriously need a Cop to tell you that was not acceptable? Number plate left in on dashboard woud be more legible than that

Fit a proper plate, cop was 100% correct imo.

Sticker plates are the job leave it on..never mind the lads they have little to be doing.

yeah that looks totally unreadable and therefor illegal! if i was a gard id pull you no hesitation as you cold be flying through speed traps left right and centre,

is he making you pull it off and go show him in a few days when you have a legal one, they did that with my tints

what are you talking about???? only one with little to be doing is someone who wants to dig up legal technicallities to try justify having an illegal plate, either man up and dont listen to the cop, or change the fookn thing... hardly need to start a thread about a stick on number plate

I personaly wouldn put a number plate there but if u got a nice small one and put it where they normally are it would look better even though the guards dont like them either

Nice clean scooby

If you really want a plate there, then put a proper plate at a 45 degree angle on a bracket
But you would be better off with a sticker in the corner The windacreen than there

I however would just go for standard plate fitment myself

Im just saying there are worse things u can be doing and they could really be out catching all the people with no tax etc but sure we could go on about this for years i just think its ridiculous. I have seen many a ferrari with these plates wonder if the guards say it to those lads!

Your car looks well, but when you have a noticable car like an Subaru

(usually they hear you before they see you!)

Then you go put on a plate that aint legal, when 99% of the public

have "normal" plates then your pulling their chain.

Go with nice jap plates or the standard ones. Enough drama in life without

going looking for it.

Seems like this thread got a good reply KenC so I think it was a great idea top put up a post about it. There are a few mixed reviews, which is what I was looking for.

It's not unreadable at all, it is the same as the normal, hence why I was asking. It's just because I only have pics that have the plate marked out. I take in all your points, thanks lads

if a cop car is coming against you....your number plate is unreadable..... it is illegal

i dont see how you expected to get mixed opinions.......

I could be wrong but I think We all used to break some rules sometimes on the road. Would rather enjoy My night drive on a back road and let go by local Garda because of My attitude towards Them. No need to look for unnecessary trouble. You can argue with Him and next time He sees You doing anything wrong, penalty points are guarantied along with highest possible fine. Is that reg plate really worth it?

With BAwagon regarding this one.

Got stopped a few times in last car for small plates only been stopped once after changing them
