GC8 suspension failure

Tango

Sunday Drivers
So I was driving at 100kph on the south link dual carriageway this morning, and bang, front strut collapsed :nono:

I haven't removed it yet as I'm tired and pissed off, but on first inspection it appears the cup part of the strut sheared off the main body of the shock. :wtf:

Afaik, the suspension was original subaru stuff, I've never seen a car fail in this manner.

So far it's cost me the towing fee, and I'm pretty sure the brand new tyre @ €105, only 60 miles done on it :puke3:

Pics to follow...

Bad luck lad

If I was you I would inspect them all, you don't want another going next week with the same issue

is it an ex uk car?

It is indeed an ex uk car. Really low mileage when brought over so it never crossed my mind this was an issue. Worried where this will end with replacing parts :(

Shocks to begin with I guess, KGB shocks or BC coilovers?

That's no excuse for not turning up this morning John :icon_lol:

Seriously though your lucky you escaped serious harm there!! If you can afford BC Coilovers then I'd recommend them 100%. Time for a full inspection first before looking at spending €€€€ in your head...if you know what I mean!

I really wish I had the money to fix it straight away, I don't want to cut corners either.

Herself will be without a car for a week or two, plus now is a good time to do the timing belt :) silver lining and all that!

So tyre is absolutely screwed, luckily the alloy escaped pretty much unscathed :subaru:

Two new KYB shocks to be collected tomorrow. The shock on the car had rusted down to paper thin metal, it's not worth thinking about the what ifs. The good news is leash an €500 will se me back on the road good as new. Now to find 500 quid...

The damage to my once lovely new tyre :argh:

The damaged shock

Boxes of goodies to remedy the situation, and cambelt/water pump while I'm at it :)

What I wanna know... Did you play the EURO Millions after that?!?
You're one lucky sod and must've had an angel on your shoulder for that one! :icon_pray:

I really really am!
There are a couple of fast left handers near my home, i don't even want to think of what could have happened if the failure had been 8 miles earlier. I was going to bring my wife and new baby for the spin too, scary.

The good news is the car will be better than ever in a few days time :)
