Hi All,

What budget do you think would cover buying a clean, Irish reg GC8 Type R?. Been sitting waiting for one to come up for well over a year now.

Japan isn’t an option even with the weaker yen, VRT is a killer.

Impossible answer really.
Very few actual good cars about , the same few rough type r pop up in around the 20 - 30k mark every few months.
Everybody idea of clean is different also
Word of mouth is your best option , ask about.
I think the likes of a mint blue v5 or v6 limited you wont have change from 50k
Other colours would be cheaper , just depends what your after really.
Forget about japan until they get close to vintage but even over there now not many clean ones pop up , lots of dogs.
It was hard get a good type r here 15 years ago , nevermind now.

Cheers for the info. Would love a dark grey one but at this stage I’m not picky to be honest. Blue was never in price range.

No issue with something g that needs a bit of TLC, they all will at this stage. Dream was always to pull one out of Japan but refuse to hand over €15-20k VRT. By the time the coupes hit 30 years I’d fear the price has shot up again.

I actually have 2 there ATM both very low kilometre cars on Irish plates and I sold a good few of these over the years the last one being late last year so I’ve a bit of experience with them . The value of a type r like a lot of classics depends hugely on the car itself , you can’t generalise as you need to take a lot of factors into it . Not only kilometres but the condition of the piticular car itself , like is there history has it had a rebuild does it need bodywork etc etc… these are a very limited run car compared to the 4dr people don’t appreciate that fully either you’ve a very limited number of cars in total . I would say your looking min 45k to get a good Irish reg type r’ now but I would actually advise it’s worth paying a bit more for a very very good car that maybe has had a recent engine rebuild as you could spend more restoring a poor one than buying a good one in the first instance . You could wait for the cheap VRT but by then chances are the value of these appreciating cars will negate any savings , and for lads saying they will come back or the market will drop forget that as the raffles have made sure that you’ll never get a “ cheap” one again . Well unless you win it .

All very true it seems. Raffles are partly to blame in this part of the world but I’m a sucker for paying into them too anyways haha.
