HI ALL
JUST WONDERING IF ANYONE COULD HELP WAS GOING HOME YESTERDAY
EVENING AFTER BEEN DRIVING THE CAR FOR ABOUT A HALF HOUR.I
SLOWED DOWN BEHIND A CAR WENT TO SELECT FIRST IT SEEMED LIKE
IT WAS HITTING A BRICK WALL.THIS HAPPENED BEFORE AND CAME RIGHT AGAIN ITS A PAIN IM JUST WORRIED ITS THE BOX THERE IS A SLIGHT WHINE WHEN DRIVING THAT STOPS WHEN CLUTCHED

CHEERS IN ADVANCE
GORDON

is the whine there when the car is stationary, or only when driving. if when driving is it in all gears

The whine could be a release bearing and the difficult gear selection could be loose gear linkage. These would be the simplest ones to rectify, so hopefully nothing too serious.

When your trying to put it into first and its not letting you, try lifting the clutch and let it slowly engage. Does it pop into gear then?

Have something similar with mine... When i try to select first when stationary sometimes it just wont go in... Most of the time if you let the clutch out and then back in again it will go straight in but occasionally i would have to put it into second before it would go in... Is it similar or anyone know what it is that would cause it?

I had the same problem, got a new clutch and it was gone.....

NICE ONE LADS THE WHINE IS ONLY IN IT WHILE DRIVING AND I DONT THINK ITS THE RELEASE BEARING AS I ONLY GOT A NEW CLUTCH FITTED WHEN THE ENGINE WAS REBUILT AT THE START OF THE YEAR BUT IN SAYING THAT IT DOES GO OUT OF IT WHEN I CLUTCH.THERE IS ALSO A SMALL BIT OF PLAY IN THE GEAR STICK BUT I DONT THINK ITS ANY THING EXCESSIVE.
AGAIN CHEERS LADS ALL HELP MUCH APPRECIATED I MIGHT DROP IVER TO DAVE AND SEE CAN HE SHED ANY LIGHT HOPEFULLY ITS A SIMPLE FIX AND NOTHING SERIOUS

it sounds like it might be the front diff, have seen a few of them go on uk model. when you clutch in you take the load off the diff, thats why it goes quiet. is it loud when on full trottle and off throttle. if you clutch in while traveling on a tight roundabout you will prob get the noise back. hope i'm wrong though

NICE ONE MATE I HOPE YOU ARE AS I CANT AFFORD TO GET IT DONE .IT CAN BE LOUD ON AND OFF THROTTLE AND GETS QUIET WHEN CLUTCH IS IN.IF THIS IS THE PROBLEM IS EXPENSIVE AND IS IT BETTER TO RECONDITION OR PUT A SECOND HAND ONE IN INSTEAD

Sounds more like the bearing in the gearbox, which can make noise for a long time before it needs attention. Another cause can be a damaged spigot bearing in the flywheel. This can get damaged when re-fitting the engine. Change the oil in the box first, and see what difference it makes, I use Castrol, but there are many other food oils mentioned on here. It definitly not the clutch bearing, as this only make's noise when you press the clutch pedal, if it's worn. The play in the gearstick is usually the spring at the top of the box onto the gear selection rod, or the u/j joint on the same rod.

wouln't say its the spiggot bearing, as you would only hear it when the clutch is pressed. the shaft bearing does give a bit of trouble, but i find the uk spec give more trouble with diffs. try the roundabout thing, good for showing up the diff.

I have seen them make noise when off the clutch, if they have been damaged when fitting an engine or box. As said above, the engine was removed and re-fitted. It's unlikely, but possible,

true, have seen some wierd things from subaru's lately :dontknow:

NICE ONE LADS ALL HELP MUCH APPRECIATED I WILL TRY THAT AND SEE.THERE WAS A NEW SPIGOT SHAFT BEARING PUT IN WHEN THE ENGINE WAS REBUILT.
I JUST HOPE ITS SOMETHING SIMPLE WILL WAIT AND SEE
