golf R (advice)

I have a manual golf r over a year now all I can say is there a very impressive car! Great power too made 360 bhp and over 400 pounds of torque with just a remap off AP. Put a good set of brake pads in it and the brakes are unreal. Mine has the dcc suspension and I put a thicker arb in the back and ps4s tyres all round the car is super capable now.

Buy one Ross👍

Ross good mate of mine Dave might remember him from nur trip asked him for his opnion worked for revo for years had a 550+ demo golf r drove lots of em..here's his response

"Mk7/7.5 R pretty much same, based on later very good MQB platform. 7.5 has the later 7speed DSG but also only had one year production before they got GPF filters (lost 10bhp and something else to go wrong)
Generally pretty bomb proof car. Just usual stuff like coils, some bushes and if your unlucky the DSG mechatronics unit. But I’ve been away from them for a few years so maybe more problems have come to light since

Mk6 R completely different thing. Based on older mk5 Golf platform and runs a version of the older belt driven TFSI engine. Very well known engine with quite a few issues but nothing too serious.

Mk7/7.5 is a sharper drive than the 6 and easier to get big power from. 6 is much much rarer so more collectible."

"Are they dull. Depends on what you’re comparing it to. Compared to a Scoob yes they are a bit bland and lacking in drama but they are a much easier car to live with everyday. If you want something fun step back to a mk7 GTI Clubsport or TCR. Same bigger turbo engine as R but 2wd with front diff so lighter and more pointy. Also looks better than R and is less predictable. Also remember Seat Leon Cupra is a good value alternative"

Also recommend i30N

Great read that. Brilliant info to have.
Have to admit... R Mk6 is quite a rare machine to be fair

Great cars I’m told. I know very little about them.
Reliability is very good.

Standard non bank breaking issues really, near like service issues you’d expect.

YouTube would fix them on a Saturday…..

Now.. with my little knowledge… FCUK the R!!!

Ask mam,Dad & Credit Union Motorsport…..

Buy the Club Sport!!! 10 times The Car!!!

Tell me I’m wrong… go on… 👍🏻

Great car to own and my experience with that MQB platform and the EA888 engines is in the form of 2 Seat Leon ST - a 2016 and our current 2019 one. The 2016 Seat Leon Cupra ST is basically a Golf GTI underneath, fwd with an EA888 engine and a 6 speed box. The 2019 Seat Leon Cupra ST is a Mk7.5 Golf R underneath with the opf, 7 speed and 4drive. Both fun cars and the 2019 model is just more of an all weather animal. The usual bits to watch out for are water pumps that leak, coilpacks that sometimes die randomly and basic wear and tear. Parts are relative cheap and available readily as they are shared across a number of VW cars(mqb platforms). Very easy to make good power from them with the whole Stage 1, 2, 3 nonsensical classification. You can even have multiple maps on the ecu now with 95Ron, 95+booster, 98ron, E40+95ron, stock and valet mode (any of your chosing can be put on via the left selector on the steering colum and the rev counter tells you which map number you are on). With a few small upgrades on the chassis it will add a bit more poise to the driving experience but to be honest, on the road it really doesn't need it as it's very quick and grip is very impressive.

As mentioned Aoughus can remap them very reliably and Autobay (Barry in Drogheda) also knows the platform backwards. Barry is a one stop shop if you need mechanical work and a remap done. My mk5 Gti was done by him with the K04 conversion.

Personally, I don't think there is a more affordable option for performance and price in this bracket than a Golf R or a GTI for the matter that gives so much driving fun for the money. Granted it will never feel like our Subarus but it was never meant to be a Subaru. It is an excellent modern all rounder and I think it would be money well spent looking for a clean example within your budget. Best bit, they are very easy to resell and maintain a good bit of their value :)
