Hi guys,

I was just reading an article on journal.ie this morning about 4 stolen cars recovered in a yard in Dublin. Looks like they were to be broken for parts. Anyway someone asked in the comments if a lot of cars were now fitted with trackers, which got me thinking!!!

So im wondering if anyone on here has one fitted or could recommend a particular one etc.... Had a quick look on e-bay.ie and saw this one. Not sure if there any good. Im useless with technical stuff! http://www.ebay.ie/itm/321201004176?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

Any opinions appreciated!

Any info on cost etc and how they are monitored etc??

I really think they would be worth it!

There are a lot of different type tracker things out there, stuff that is hard wired into the car and stand alone units, the stand alone units are usually smaller than a packet of fags {easily hidden inside or outside the car} it runs on a lithium battery and uses a sim card, which can last up to a year depending on the usage apparently, i have a couple of brochures at work with web addresses and that i will post links tomorrow. The downside of the hard wired option is that if its found one wire cut will render it useless. The hard wired option is very expensive as opposed to the stand alone unit, which you can pick up for under 300 quid.

the boss monitors them lol, they like to make sure we work a full day ,
, if you buy one with a ready to go sim card in it , it will only use credit when you use it , very handy , just send the tracker a text and you get a text back with co-ordinates

Wouldn't recommend cheap e bay jobbies

Bought one a while back with microphone (which was excellent could hear kids sitting in the car) but couldn't get the tracker to work . Kept telling me car was in the sea off Coast of Africa.
Various mails to supplier couldn't sort just ripped it out in the end

What about an I pod (with the find my pod app) wired/hidden in the car. Might work???

I have a Sniper Selftrack fitted to my car. I find it pretty good. It has loads of options including remote shut down via txt. Also you can ring the tracker and listen to what's been said in the car. It Will notify of an alarm activation, low battery, main power disconnect, tow alert for if car moves without ignition being on. Preset 3 numbers to receive the alerts. These numbers Will also receive an sos message giving your coordinates if sos button in the car is pressed.

Just put a sim card in it and its fully self operational. There is an app for the tracker too.

All these trackers work on some sort of GSM, (SIM card) of some sort or other, price depends on the amount of usage, you could set up a report on a daily basis or more frequent, depending on the system installed, if you have only got a single report a day and its robbed after your daily report you will hafta wait til its next report before you can increase the frequency. Some you can ping to get the latest report, think it can be costly doh as said in earlier post i will put up links tomorrow. Hopefully they will help.
Question is what is your pride and joy worth to you? Could an insurance company give ye back the car that was taken from you or something that ye hafta spend a few grand on to get back what ye have lost, and will they give you that money???

I got this one.

http://www.ebay.ie/itm/TK102-Smalle...ics_GPSSystems_GPSSystems&hash=item4ac2e94d3a

You will need another sim card, any this it how it works, the sim card will need to be toped up with credit, and the device sends you a text message with the location ( if it does have signal, will send it as soon as it gets ), it gives you coordenates and current speed, also a link for google earth...

Works just fine for me.

When u say a link for google earth, you mean u can see where the car is on a map? Can u follow it live?

Genius idea, download Find my iPhone/iPod app and away you go, brilliant.

How would you charge it? the stand alone units work because they have long life batteries.

I mailed mds about a tracker been installed and it's 350e. That's tracker and fitting. 100e extra to install the shut down by txt program. Think it's really good for that price. Might buy that
One on eBay and see how it is for a bit. Can go wrong for that money.

Heres a link to a website www.gps2find.com
these are stand alone units that work off self contained batteries, they are reasonably priced but im sure there is better on the market, i know you can set an area and if it moves out of that area it sends you a text.
Had a brochure on another system but cant find it :hammerhead: if i do i will stick up a link
