GT-B mapped or not?

I am close to buying a Legacy GT-B but don't know if it has been remapped to run on our fuel. Now it is owned by my mechanic and I know it runs very smooth and well, but he doesn't know if it has been mapped either (it's been off the road for the last few years). Possibly the first owner here had it mapped when he got it.

How easy is it to find out if this has been done? If it hasn't can I run it temporarily on our fuel with an additive (maybe 2-3 weeks until the NCT comes around)?

I am buying it on the provision it passes the NCT so don't want to get it remapped if I end up not buying it, so if it is ok for a few weeks, passes the NCT, I will purchase and get it remapped...

Any advise appreciated!

Have you a link to a for sale add or a pic of the car you can put up.
It may be worth getting it done for peace of mind

I recomend getting it maped yourself as soon as u get it to be sure all the stats can be checked at that stage and depending on use ie track car weekend driver or daily driver map could be adusted or changed ect dego worth it for peice of mind alone for the small outlay

Here's a pic. No ad as it is a private sale, just happened to mention I was looking for one to my mechanic, so good timing. Bodywork is getting sorted before I purchase, full service, new tyres, new pads.

I will definitely get it mapped if it hasn't already been done, just don't want to spend the money if it fails the NCT on something big and I end up not buying it.

Is there an additive I could use for the 2-3 weeks pre NCT? Oh, and it's going to be a daily driver!

U shouldn't need additive, 2 cats in it so emissions shouldn't be a prob unless a sensor is gone
Think he means using octane booster untill the Nct when he will know of he is buying it or not.

If you drive it without driving it on it will be ok on only 95 buy you can add half a bottle of Lucas booster or something to a tank but I still wouldn't dog it untill I knew for sure...
If it hasn't been mapped before it's going to be expensive to map6-700 quid

Yes that's what I mean. So good to know, I will restrain myself!!
But ouch, didn't think it would be that expensive. What makes it so expensive? Hardware, labour?

If he ( the seller) doesn't know it's been mapped, most likely it hasn't been.

Why go for this car if its been sitting up for a few years and needs paint and servicing.

A lot of pipes may be perished and will need changing if they have been left for to long?

Well said

Lots of cheap well maintained leggies out there any car that's been siting up could end up costing a good bit

Yep, I am getting it at a good price, and I know the history. Also have comeback as I am buying from my mechanic who I have known for a long time, so I am comfortable with it.

Paying €1,350 for it with new tyres, brake pads, bodywork done, full service and new NCT.

Can't passing it for that price as I'd say it would cost that much to do all the work.

You don't know the history though!

I wouldn't bother mapping it if it has high miles, as you'll pay half of what your paying for the car just to map it and it could go bang next week.

Plenty of b4 out there unmapped

Good point, but there's only about 70k miles on it according to the clock. I know very little mileage has been put on it in Ireland but whether it was fiddled with on the boat over is anyone's guess!

Defo worth the money at that price anyway

Best of luck with it, there a nice bus

owned subarus for over 10 years and never had one of them mapped, never had a problem with them but they were kept standardish. Saying that they were always serviced every 3-5000kms. Once you look after it it will be fine unmapped

:plusone:- i know its best practice to remap for irish fuel but since you don't know history of car i would'nt spend on the 'unknown'- just service it on the button. had a few jap scoobies and never remapped for irish fuel, never any issue's (maybe i was just lucky)- if you have the money , do it, if you don't , don't- i put up 160,000 km on a jap b4 with no remap and never any issuses. enjoy her either way :subaru:

That's all good to know, thanks.

I am considering getting it converted to LPG (gasp!), but will run it on petrol first of a while.

I'll let you know how I get on!
