I think comparing the Golf GTI V to the new WRX is a fair comparison. The WRX is more expensive, more powerful and has AWD so there's really no case for arguing that the STI is the more appropriate car to use.
MY TT has the same engine as the Golf GTI V and after an Upsolute remap I have no problem keeping up with 300 bhp STI's. The standard 197 bhp TT was only 1 second slower around Top Gear's test tack than the WR1 which has 120 bhp more.
Subaru needs to go back to the drawing board and remember why the Impreza Classic is just that a classic. Lightweight, AWD, giving the most bang for your buck. 72K STI's are not what made the marque. For that kind of money you have a lot of seriously cool cars to choose from like a 2 year old RS4. The WRX needs at least 260 bhp / 260 ib/ft torque and the brakes and handling to match. Why they cant extract those figures form a 2.5 is beyond me. Just look at the hot hatches....Leon Cupra 237, GTI V anniv 230, Megane F1 R32 230, Audi S3 270, Audi TTS 273. All these cars are 2 litres, have decent emissions and mpg figures. The competition has caught up and its time for Subaru to make a giant leap forward as the new WRX is not so much a leap forward as a shuffle backwards
