Head gasket??

Heres the issue.

The car is loosing or using quite a bit of coolant, I filled the Forge header tank in the morning drove approx 50 miles and it was empty. The car did not overheat, the is heat coming from heaters inside the car and there is no creamy sludge in oil or shite in header tank.

Slightly lumpy when cold, but have had this issue with 2 other imprezas ive had with no issues.

Surely if it was HG I would have other signs if its using this amount of water somewhere?

Anyone hazard a guess please!

Are you getting allot of white smoke from your exhaust? That would usually be a sign of the head gasket gone.

Dont check the header tank for the white creamy grunge, you have to check the oil re-fill neck, where you top the car up with oil check the top of that cap...

You must have a small leak somewhere, have you checked all a round the rad to make sure its not cracked...?

Its wierd, had a bit of steam coming from turbo direction at one point, stopped the car, checked it and saw steam from turbo.
Checked the header tank at the time and very little if no pressure from header tank when opened.

But that was only once, aint happened again!

Check the coolant pipes going to the turbo and the pipes going to your heater matrix (Under the top mount) for leaks. Pretty sure they are the only coolant pipes in that area.

Steve.

Getting it up to my mechanic today, surely it would be obvious if hg was gone, if it was taking this much water, I would have other symptoms wouldnt i??

Does your expansion bottle that is attached to the back of the rad be full of coolant??
Can you here your coolant boiling after a hard drive!

Both of the above means head gasket failure is letting the combustion pressure from the cylinders to the coolant system,
hence over pressureising your coolant system, forcing the coolant out through your rad cap and into the over flow, which in turn over flows! and the coolant is lost,
All the air in your coolant system will depressurise the system which in turn lowers the boiling temp of the coolant!

That's my experiance
Dan

Rights lads, just back now, the rad has a crack in it. So a new one going in tomorrow, prob is I have a forge header tank, and the mechanic was worried it had built pressure, couldnt blow the forge tank so found the rad next weakest point.

Because of this pressure, it could have done the head gasket??

Now it has not thrown water out of the overflow tank by the battery cause its bone dry inside it, and there is no pressure in the header tank?
Now this morning it ran rather lump for a bit and cleared up, and this is causing me concern, ie water in the cylendar??

Anyone shed light on this?? Would I have some other symptoms??

Right was speaking to mike dean and he said if it was leaking into the cylinder it would automatically pressurise the system and blow water out the overflow bottle, have topped up the coolant and ran the engine for a while, no boiling, no overflow water, nothing just smooth running?

Should i be ok??

Let us know how you get on!
Hopefully she'll be grand!
Dan

New Rad, Filled coolant, bled the system, left idle for 1/2 hour, no blowing out coolant temp gauge bang on!

Happy Days!

Cheer lads for the help!

as above thats what i am getting with my s.t.i when i drive it hard i hear it bubbling and then coolant pisses out of her from the overflow bottle i dropped it into the mechanic he done a block test and said nothing showed up and he isnt a hundred percent sure it is gone but after reading that above it must be my mechanic also said he reckons the mapping has been altered as in someone messing with the fc commander as its set for 1.4 bar but only hitting 0.95 he says that if it is mapped wrong ie if someone was messing with it this could cause it to overheat also is this tru i am at my witts end with the car its sitting in the garden gathering dust and its running lumpy as fu*k from cold and when i rev it she cuts out as if the idle isnt set or something any ideas

Jaysus,
Sorry to hear that man!
I don't beleive that mapping can make your car over heat, unless the map blow the head gasket and that causes the overheat!
Just for the craic, throw a new rad cap on to her, see does it make a difference,
But when this happened to me, the head gasket was leaking the combusted air from the cylinders into the coolant galleries that surround the cylinders, so the effectively pumped the coolant out of the system, and out of the over flow bottle,
get someone to do a CO2 test on the coolant in the overflow bottle, if it has CO2 in it, then it is exhaust gasses and defo head gaskets!
unless of course you are running big boost on a big turbo on a high compression engine, in which case your heads could be lifting clean off the block!!
Dan

As above,

A sniff test for Hydrocarbons in the coolant is the easiest way to test for it. Or a compression leak down test (NOT COMPRESSION TEST)

Contact one of the traders on here, best off getting a mechanic that knows Subarus to give you a definite answer on your problem!

Hope you get her sorted soon mate

yeah so do i cause its really pissing me off like i just need someone to have a proper root into it and say its fixable or its not ya know that way like i dont have the money to pay for a re map and the head gasket to be done but i could stretch for one of them to be done ha is there any of the lads based around the tallaght area or close by that knows exactly what there talking about as i rang a trader here and left 2 messages and never got a reply off them

Ring Ciaran in ASD, based in walkinstown so right beside you.. 0878330772

Cairan races his cars at the weekends,
So if you rang at the weekend you may have got lost!
