Hello all - bit of advice required I think !

Sunday Drivers
Hi folks,

Finally registered recently, although i've been reading the forum on/off over the last 18months. I currently drivce an E46 M3, and its tax is up at the end of the month (€1566). I love the car dearly, but the roadtax side of things annoys the hell out of me. On top of all that, this time last year the car was pretty much useless, as its sitting on coilovers and has 10" wide wheels on the rear, it made it impossible to get around in the snow/ice.

Fast forward to this year, and the NCT is now due, and the car has a few issues that need money spent on them, if I was to get it through the NCT. So I'd probably need to budget 3K+ to be spent on the car to get it 100% road worthy, and then I bet it will snow, and I won't be going anywhere, :hammerhead:

That leaves me with 3 options;

1) Put the car in storage and buy a 2nd car with smaller engine than 3.2 ! so as I don't get stung tax wise, and work on the above issues during the coming year.
2) Walk for the next few months everywhere, and bite the bullet now on getting the car sorted
3) Do nothing !

I'm hovering around option 1 and the moment, and when it comes to cars we all have specific ones we'd like to own at some stage. So thats led me to looking at some turbo Subarus, no model in particular, but something with a bit of poke and sure footed, and hopefully not a magnet for tea-leafs :(

I've spotted this Subaru Forestor STi on donedeal http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/2697845 and it seems like a good car (without seeing it in person). Does anyone know the car itself ? and what would I need to look out for on a 100K flat 4 motor ?

I don't do big mileage really, probably max 4000 miles per year, and I mostly don't drive the car to work, but would the above be any worse than 18MPG - 22MPG that I currently average on the M3 ?

Thanks folks - and apologies for the long intro :D

would be about the same mpg as the m3 if you use the turbo a good bit but if you stay out of turbo you might get 23-25mpg if your lucky

does anyone have any links to threads or posts about the car ? if it was on here before ? any info would be great help, assuming its not got a busted engine and its a rebuild now :D

Good to know on the MPG lads ! any other tips or things to look out for on the Forestor specifically ? any electrical issues ? or set points waterpumps/belts need doing ?

Was that Dans original one that he blew the engine in? lot of car for the money
Don't think that's Dans old one but I'm not 100% positive on that!!!
Probably should point out that version of Forrester is 250 bhp not 280 (as far as i know)so unless there is work done to it, the figure in the add is wrong!!!
Someone else was asking about that same car recently but I can't find info or posts at the minute

Used to see this a bit around the Blanch/Ballycoolin area, always looked well polished anyway.

Welcome to the club :subaru: :subaru: :subaru:

I'd actually like an automatic, believe it or not :cuckoo: , coming from a 6 speed manual, and having driven quite a few autos over the last few months, I'm becoming a lazy git . Also anything is probably better than an M3 on wintry irish roads.

heres a couple of snaps of the m3, i have the tintop for it as well. Great motor, killer roadtax though.

Those wheels are delicious!!! I hear ya on the road tax, as a bmw man myself i was very tempted to get an e34 m5 a couple of years ago, but 3.6, or 3.8L, forget it! just cant justify that expense. Unless i win the lotto i cant see myself ever going over the 2L mark tbh and even @ €614 i still feel a bit ripped off on some of the west cork roads i travel :angry1:
