something maybe to consider as in your neck of woods...

as above work out profit margins from last year in gp.. work out projected profit margins in current year with obvious building area problems..

12k budget through local papers, etc etc. would well cover and may experience more work...

Hey Dan

I used to work for the Indo Directory, and to be honest they have had major distribution issues since the start, first year trolley loads of the book were found behind buildings etc. So not sure about going with them as they dont have the recognition the GP has.

Its a lot of money and in uncertain times no guarantee to get work from it.

Im doing a great deal on A4 folded to Dl brochures at the moment that ive done for 2 attic conversion specialists in last few months!!! Give me a shout!

But at the end of the day you do have to spend money to make money!

dan i own a garage here in galway i know different to your job but that price for the golden pages is crazy :mooner: i think you would be better off budgeting for some local papers every 2nd week or so and spend some money on a good website and plug it as much as you can just a tought

I was with the Gp for years and decided not to renew .To expensive i don't know how they4 can justify the price hikes every year.I done the I/d and you will get a better add for the money but not worth it as most people use it for bus time table. Your best bet is local rags more exposure in smaller area in these times ,i find people want to keep local and generate work in there area. Or you could lower your prices and work of word by mouth and referrals as i do.. and get rid of the toys .

I usually use google or golden pages website to search for business' for any particular thing i'm after.

for anything along the line of your business though, i would go by word of mouth only and having seen a job you've done in a neighbours for example

12k is alot of money in this day and age boss i'd try to cover all avenues before i'd make a decision things are gettin quieter so the jobs u mite have got last year from the g/p mite not be there again this year most people will usually go with word of mouth and havin personally experienced ur work i know i will be definately be recommendin u 2 every 1 i know

I've only used the GP once in last few years, and that was to find a specialist in somethin i.e. someone who repairs venetian blinds... for a builder I'd be goin on past experience of friends of mine, and who they used...
on the other hand alot of buiders might be thinkin the same so you could reap the rewards with the ad.... :ponder: :ponder:

Thats alot of twine Dan, You could have my type-r for less :1poke:

On the other hand, you would be near the start of the list with ''A cut above the rest'' if you did use it. Do they give you a special phone number so that you can see how many calls you actually get from the advert ?

One of the guys here in the office knows this guy that prints a booklet of adverts, give him a call and see. I think it serves south Dublin/wicklow.

His name is Alan Earls of east coast life - 086 8351300
Tell him you got it off a mate of Mike Crowley

I say sticker up the liner, sponsor local soccer team and go word of mouth. Put the odd ad in the local rag too.

I agree with pbsti, people will be looking locally more.

I know it's hard but look at the possibilities of leaving one or two lads go. No point you going under just for the sake of being a nice guy. Cut backs are needed in times like this to run a leaner business.

Dan I've had the same issues. Spent money a few years ago on the red book, wasted... I'd stick with the GP for now but as Nially Boy suggested drop your add to a fraction of the size. Be clever with the use of coulour/white background etc. If you reduce your spend by 1/2 you can still get a very catchy and noticable add for 6k and then next year they'll offer you last years add for probably close to 8k.
My 2c.
Niall
