Sunday Drivers
hey everyone im new to the site but dont have an impreza yet...
i had a 1.6 about 3 years back but now i think its time to buy the car of my dreams..
i will be buying one in the next few weeks,i honestly dont have a clue and i need advice on what to look out for..
im in cork and went to buy one last week, WRX 2001 nct till 2013, 3000 euro car of my dreams looked mint,,had a mechanic look over it and he said it was a lemon,
he showed me loads of things up with the car.it was imported from the uk and up close it had a really bad paint job.i left it off.

anyway i have a few questions,i know to ye they will sound silly but im clueless... :embarrassed:

im looking for a new model i have about 3,300 euro to spend,i know its not alot but its my budget,
i have been told a wrx is cheaper to insure because it has a lower B.H.P is this correct???
how often should the timing belt be change??
what should i look out for when viewing??
i just want a nice standard impreza, when i get one i will maintain it 100%,any info and advice would great fully appreciated..

thanks in advance dylan....

Being honest, in my opinion, i dont think you will get a good condition new model impreza for your budget. There are some bargain cars out there but id ask why they are so cheap.

Welcome Dylan,
Just taught id share wit ya my experience in buying recently. I was looking for a while at different imprezas and had a budget to blow on one. looked at 01 and 02's etc but nothing stood out. Decided in the end not to blow my whole budget on a car but to look at cheaper cars and leave somethin in the kitty to get it 100% mechanical, service, timing belts, water pump, brakes, oils changed etc....
Have to say i am happy wit the decision i made as i know that the car is sound now and can start working on mods.

as for insurance the wrx wud be cheaper to insure compared to sti, also a jap import wrx would be dearer.

Best of luck wit ur purchase,
stapo :subaru:

First off, you have no real point in asking on here about insurance, every company is different, individuals and cars are different etc etc so no real advice can be given.
You need to find out what you can actually get insurance on, if not you are waisting your time and sellers time, you may not even be able to insure a Turbo Impreza of any kind.

2nd off, if you have the insurance sorted and know what you can buy... dont over analyse this, you have to have allowance that you have only x amount to spend and want Newage car...
If you go on without keeping this in mind, well your search is going to take months, and you will miss the Summer months which are the best months to enjoy a car and before you know its shitty winter..

Im not telling you to go out and buy a wreck, but dont be expecting gold for price of silver.

Maybe even consider a nice clean high price 99 00 UK Turbo Classic over a low price Newage??
Best of Luck... but dont let this drag out for months mate get driving

Hi Dylan
Welcome to the forum
Living in Cork myself too and driving a 01 WRX.

As one of the lads said there, I think your budget doesn’t match the car you’re after. A quick look at donedeal shows six 2001 WRX’s for sale in Munster and Dave’s is actually the cheapest of them at 4,350. If you do beg steal or borrow the cash I’d recommend having a look at it as it’s one of the best bugeyes you’ll see!

The problem with having a budget at the bottom end of what these cars are selling for is that you will miss out on the top quality ones and end up with the “cheap for a reason” car. Bringing a mechanic along to check it out is a must anyway so fair play on that.
To answer some of your questions:
Timing belt is due every 60k miles but most lads I know change before then
Insurance is too random to predict. I’ve known people to trade up to Irish STi’s from WRX’s because their insurance was the same on both.

I would try to sell you my car but it’s not standard!!

hey lad i was thinking about doing that myself.im also into classic minis i have done that with every mini i ever had, every time i buy one of them i always end up spending more than im told and waiting for parts to arrive and then waiting for the mechanic to do the work..by the time i get the car back im nearly fed up with it..i was kind of thinking i would just love to get a nice impreza well looked after and standard..i might have to sell the mini to up my budget....

your prob right lad..i suppose there are alot of young lads buying cars like these driving them into the ground and selling them on cheap..
good point alright..

Buy the best condition car your budget allows , id rather have a tidy uk turbo classic over a ropey newage car , the search for a decent car may take a while so be patient

Dave's car is really nice too so if you can raise the extra cash its worth it imo :subaru:

If you want a look at my car just as a reference point im sure i can arrange something. a very good friend of mine is from cork and a few pints of murphys is usually reason enough for a spin that far. :icon_jook:
