Hey!! Any tips for a new Subaru owner?

Hi lads and ladies,

I just got a 1999 Subaru Impreza. It is originally an Irish car and is apparently a wrx but it's bhp is about 280. On Quinn-Direct when you input your reg, it states that it is just a 2 litre turbo 4wd, but I know that these aren't always correct. I will get some pics up of her later on

I am also looking for hints and tips on maintaining an impreza. At the minute there is:
- New Misimoto Radiator
- Turboback Exhaust
- K & N
- Sti Top Mount Intercooler
- Heat Wrap Exhaust
- Tein Driving Master Basic Damper-Coilover
- White Speedline Alloys
- Apexi Turbotimer
- Front and Rear Anti Roll Bar Drop Link Polyurethane Bushes
- V8 High Rise Bonnet Scoop
- And more but just cant think of them

Because it is an Irish car it won't have to be mapped to Irish fuel  but it is overfuelling so I will get it remapped either way as I think all of the mods will benefit from it. Also this will stop the car from popping flames :icon_cry: which I won't like getting rid of

Also, any tips about the best way to take car of it would be great. Anything like original o2 sensors, uprated fuel pumps like walbro etc etc all information is much appreciated :xmas_cheers:

Thanks

Hi,

Welcome to the club!

You say you have a turbo back exhaust, so its de-catted? Do you have a boost controller? Are you not getting boost spikes because of the de-cat and hitting fuel cut?

Steve.

Yeah it is a de-cat but I got the cat off him for the NCT

Nah I need to get a boost controller, which is my next investment! No actually, I thought that there would be spikes but it is a very healthy boost and doesn't drop off at all! Hitting fuel cut? Im not sure what you mean by that?

The car would hesitate when hitting fuel cut, if the boost spikes. Strange the way she's holding boost not mapped and with no boost controller :ponder2:

Welcome lad. The car sounds nice.
Tip number one.Become a full member.
You would know fuel cut off if you had it.It's when the car nearly throws you out the front window while accelerating hard

alot of the uk spec cars would be grand with no cat and wouldnt get fuel cut

Welcome along :subaru:

afaik, if its an irish car, then it will just be known as a 2litre turbo... wrx is from japan only and the uk turbo is from uk (obviously) but same as your car...

With all those mods it does need to be mapped... it wouldn't need to be mapped if it was just standard but because of all the mods the fueling and timing need to be adjusted to suit all the modifications on the car....

Didn't know that Johnny, cheers. Mine is UK but I've a boost controller

Oh really? Haha no that is definetly not happening at all! Well it was rebuilt by Ali Burrows 14 months ago but maybe it was remapped once that was done and I just didn't ask. But it is definetly overfuelling! Would this effect performance and fuel consumption because the mixture is so rich? I will get it remapped anyway so if anybody has any ideas where to go etc then it would be great

Oh right, it makes sence now about why Quinn were saying that then! I drove a wrx before and it is much more powerful then a wrx so I am thinking of heading up to Martin Tracy to get a dyno done so I will know for sure then!

Thanks for the introduction lads, much appreciated!!

Running rich isn't as bad as running lean, but if it is really rich it can cause bore wash and could result in engine problems.

Steve.

robby

by the sound of things he only has a decat as an engine mod,k&n could be a panel filter, either way he wont need to map the the car just for a decat.

with them mods on a uk spec turbo car your power should be around 230-240 bhp

why do you rekon its over fueling????

No it's not a panel filter, it's a induction filter! It is overfuelling because it smells of fuel a lot haha

Engine problems?? Really?

Well it keeps up no problem with my mates MR2 turbo and that was dyno'd at 250bhp and it is much much lighter so I don't know about bhp but I thought it would be above 250 anyway if it keeps up with his MR2

Cheers lads! How will I fix this? I want to make sure that nothing ever happens to the engine so I am very worried of past horror stories about engines exploding :icon_sad:

I assumed the K&N was an induction kit so I assume he'll need a remap for that if it isn't already remapped?

Get it on the Dyno, Nick at couture auto in the traders section will be able to tell you if its detonating or running very rich... If it is doing either then remap it, if not then there's nothing wrong with the current map on the car...

Well I will be up there in two weeks for a service and also change of gearbox oil, diff oil and engine oil so I will mention it to them when I am up there! Thanks for the help! I just hope it hasn't done damage already!

Don't get too panicked man, all above is worst case scenario... Get onto Nick and ask him to check it for you... He can also remap it for you at the same time if needed...

Where are you smelling petrol?

Well I can smell it when I am in the car and also my mate said he can smell it when he is behind me! It is also strong enough when the car is on and standing outside of the car!
