As above lads....has anyone ever removed window tints?

I've read a few online articles that ammonia is good to remove if you can heat the windows.... or clothes steamers are another good way.

I'm hoping to take the tints off the back window and 2 side windows and I'm wary bout damaging rear window demister element!

Anyone tried this???? :dontknow:

Are you sure they can be removed Jamie? The ones on the typeR are factory arent they?

Mite be a bit risky, im sure if they were aftermarket it would be handy enough..

Cant answer your question really, just thinkin out loud!!

Even though they're factory fitted.... it must still be the same sort of tint... just might be harder to remove as there on the car a while!

i took tints off my mates rx-7 before c*nt of a job but a little trick which did help was petrol get it started then put petrol in a cloth and start applying as u peel and scrape it off it will take a few hours do doing it would not like to do it again

Cheers lads... keep the suggestions coming.... much appreciated!

Big thing that worries me is damaging the rear window demister! :wall:

i thought its was tinted glass on subarus from factory :ponder2:
ive taken some off a van before with a hairdryer just need plenty of heat on them then i used petrol to get the glue off there prob better stutt than that though the rear window will be tricky you cant use a blade on that
good luck wit it

Cheers Alan....

Right.... new question....

Anyone know if STi Rear windows are laminted tints... like the sort you can get fitted.... or is the tint actualy in the glass???? :ponder2:

Any advice welcome... cheers all!

Not sure about the type r but in my saloon they're deffo stick on tints as opposed to being coloured glass.

Cheers Alan... from that thread it sounds like they might be coloured glass! Bugger! :icon_confused:

I'll check em with a razor tonight!

Well jamie, i got my windows re-done when i got my car as the rear side window tints had tears in them... When i dropped the car over to the fella to do them he said , if he was to take the rear one off it would definatly bring the de-mister wires with it so i left it alone...

The only thing would be to try and source a un-tinted rear glass from a breakers

Don't want to take the windows out though!

Apparently heating it with a hairdryer and spraying ammonia on it is how you strip rear window. You don't use a blade... just a softish pot scrub which removes tint but won't damage demister! I hope...

Not that you'll be wanting to need it but if you damage the demister strips on the back window you can actually buy a metal paint thingie from a motor factors to paint the line back in again

Its dark glass, them japs dont do things the easy way

Take out the glass and paint the whole shell while your at it, It will be a proper paint job rather than trying to mask up around them.

To take tint off a window tat has been on for a while is near impossible, it will wreck your head, and you prob destroy the thing.. if you on about the standard tint on typer, no way is that jus like the shite you buy in halfords.. i would expect the tint to either be in glass or in layer of laminate in the glass
