How economical is a 520d

As above looking at getting an 04-06 520d in the next 2 months or so. I have just got a new job and do around 500kms a week which I get from 46 euro in my ej9.

Now I am looking to upgrade to a cruiser for the comfort.

Would a 520d be much more expensive than my current car fuel wise.

Had a 2008 320d m sport...never again.... Servicing is ridiculous on them. Everytime I sat into the thing it was like a small child. Constantly looking for something. Buy something run of the mill and 1.6d if your doing that. I.e. Mondeo, skoda, avensis. That kinda thing

I just traded in my 07 520d , 220,000 Klms on the clock with not a spot of bother on it bar regular servicing, you MUST service it regularly, get swirl flaps removed if still on the car & a remap is a must if you like real poke, I got 850klms to a full tank roughly €95 , 1/2 motorway driving & 1/2 through town, auto is a must I think anyway, lovely machine to drive.

Do the swirl flaps cause much hassle on these ?

So similar milage to what I am getting in the civic, expected it to be heavier on juice than that being a big car so thats a plus.

Not mad on the looks of the e46 unless its an m3. I think the e60's are a gorgeous car and have always wanted one since they came out.

Would any of you recommend any other cars, I was thinking of the following

Alpha 159
Golf gttdi 2.0
mondeo st
530d m sport (maybe if i have enough for tax)
passat 06 model

Not 100% sure on the budget yet

Swirl flaps were basically made of butter pre 08, they stick or break off and get ingested into the engine, not good. Easy fix though for bout €70, need oil breather filter checked as they gunk up if the old fashioned loo roll type, easily switched for newer vortex type. Would have kept mine for years only for I do 1000klm odd per week
