Importing from outside EU

So obviously, there's VAT at 23% to be added to anything you import from outside the EU when its caught but what other taxes and charges may possibly apply to something that is stopped by customs on its way in to the country?

Vat is on the shipping too and I think another few percent for customs charges too. Always about 26% I allow and then sometimes 15-20 quid handling fee from fedx or similar for paying on your behalf.over 650 euro of declared value and you will need a customs clearance agent to deal with it for u of coming through an post I think

Thanks Dan, is that only if coming through an post for over €650? If coming though UPS/DHL, do they sort it and then charge you?

What are the chance of it getting through customs? Slim to none?

Yes if coming through an post and over 650,u need to organise ur own customs clearance agent and they will charge u 50 euro to handle it on top of whatever vat and customs charges. Ups will act as the customs clearing agent for u and do it all automatically and charge u too! If its under 200 some times it can slip through but I always expect to pay it on anything over 200.

It depends somewhat on we're its coming from and what it is Robbie. Best ringing customs and getting a quote. They are very helpful and won't look for personal info or name if you're concerned.

23% vat
10% Eu duty
Port fees
Customs clearance fees..

Notification and paper work sent into customs before car arrives in Ireland.
Car will be inspected on the Docks by customs and cleared. Then you can get it, the customs have to give you paperwork... If not you can't vrt the car..

So in short.. You can't escape paying.

Thought it was about a car..
I had it averaged out about 2yrs ago that It was a 50/50 chance of being caught. But in last while everything I've got has been caught...
With Ups I seem to get caught all the time, I don't particularly agree that they pay the customs on your behalf without your permission and then charge you for doing it... From memory if there is 70-80 quid owed to customs.. UPS will charge you about 20 quid, + vat on their charge for paying the Vat on item..FFS It's a joke.

No point in doing the "Gift" thing or sample as you end up with a parcel that has no value and the customs will put there value on it... So now I always get it marked down in price and clearly state for talk sake 80 euro for item and 20 euro for shipping.... If you don't mark this they will take the liberty of adding there own shipping value estimate which is extremely high... I got stung for 40euro shipping estimate when it only cost 10 and had to pay the vat on 40 on top of vat on item..

Thanks ken, I figured about getting caught for it anyway so was trying to work out the final delivered price to see if it even worthwhile buying from japan or just buy from the uk.

Nengun offer 3 options for declared insurance value, you can value it at 100% and get stung for everything or you can value the parts at 10% or 50% in which case customs may only charge you on that 10 or 50%. But the flip side is that if you're package goes missing, you're only insured for the declared value and with parts worth over a grand, I'm not sure it's a chance I'm willing to take.

I've found from ordering overseas before that there's less chance getting stung if you get things sent through the normal post
If a courier (UPS etc) is used you will get stung
Has anyone looked into getting stuff delivered to NI....are their rates cheaper?
