So many variable of how engine is ran in, when serviced, what fluids, how it's driven etc etc etc. Honda say up to 1 litre for every 1000 miles depending on how driven is acceptable for the K20 engine. Some will use none, some will use the full allowance. In cases were there's FSH and the consumption is higher than allowed tolerances they investigated and where engines were found to be faulty, they were replaced/repaired under warranty or as good gesture.

Sounds the same as Subarus policy .
A road car engine should not use oil between services.
at wat mileage ?

At least 5k Km's should not burn or use a drop through breathers or whatever .

well i meant more so in what mileage engine has on it?

standard engine. high mileage. piston ring or turbo wear etx.

on the subject....

how can every 5k km be classed as same usage. example i have car that use no oil on road in 5k km on road. but use on heavy use on track. say 10 laps mondello at 3k km per lap

so one 5k intervil never drive in that manor. next 5k km you drive on backroads this way.

next is if standard or forged. and clearence allowences down to usage on a forged piston.

thats without even going into crankcase pressure differences on 2.0 or 2.5L on forged or non forged engine. or standard or high boost levels etc. at 300bhp or 450bhp.

so so many varibles.

Adjust the oil service accordingly to how it's been driven?

Exactly, is always change the oil and filter after a trackday regardless of mileage into service interval just keep it right I do the same with the ka every time I do a trackday

I know that dave but I just making a point an engine in extreme use should get more frequent oil changes, also even if a road engine is using oil, frequently changing the oil will help with usage as the oil won't have degraded as much as letting it out to manufacturer's spec

i was refering to oil usage. not oil changes

Uses more obviously on track through the breathers . On backroads not really

2.5s use a bit of oil. Owner neglects to check it . Failure, simple as that really.

For sure, I'm just speculating.... but this car has 6k service intervals, how much oil could it burn in 6k miles? are they that bad? And surely after 10 years experience with this engine if it was an issue Subaru UK would be reducing the oil intervals even further? I think the EVO FQ400 had 3k intervals..
I think because you lads are good mechanics and you are used to dealing with problems, you tend to be a bit more philosophical about engine failures. I'd be looking at this from then consumer point of view, looking at other 400hp 50k cars...RS4, M3,C63 etc if they were burning dangerous amounts of oils between services and shitting themselves would it be acceptable?

Early E46 M3's were giving bottom end trouble, were recalled and oil recommendation changed.
they blamed the oil but was shell bearings not up to the job on an engine block that has been around in some form for 10 years or more
Just 1 of many performance cars giving trouble out of the box.
nothing is bullet proof.
