Insurance

Right, have to have a small rant here. I'm 37, have wanted a scooby for a long time and have started getting serious about picking one up. Clean licence, live in the country and as I say I'm no spring chicken. I have a longing for an STI - but cannot get insurance. I have a car already, so this would be a second car. I can only get insurance (with a struggle) for a WRX. Cant even get a quote for an STI. Have tried my broker, who tried all the usual insurers and no joy. Tried another crowd and they managed to get me a quote for the WRX. Got a call today from the broker who has been trying all week and he said he has only one quote that's come back for an STI - its 1500 with a 3000 excess. Broker said he wouldn't be able to recommend it, due to the excess.

Surely, there has to be plenty of lads out there with second cars and scoobies? Strangely, I asked if this was my main car (or only car)would it be different, told it wouldn't be - STI's are a total no go for insurance companies.

Whats the story? Interested in any experiences, advice or tips - especially from STI drivers.

End Rant :)

Plenty of topics on here covering it, I'm 31, Insured on an sti for at most€430 or somewhere near that, buy the sti, ring the insurance company, tell them its in your driveway and you want to transfer your insurance, also if you have a wife/girlfriend put them on it.

You could move your current car policy on to the sti, then reinsure the daily commuter.

Or could insure the wife/girlfriend on it and you as a named driver.

Maybe I've misunderstood but have you rang around yourself/tried online quotes or are you just using your broker?

have my sti 3 years now , after an initial battle with quinn direct at the time to insure it i haven't had a bother since , the first policy is the hardest one to get on one , mine was down to 600 odd last year so it can be done ,

who are you currently insured with

im 33 and have my jdm bug sti nearly 5 years

currently with axa through the AA website insurance paying roughly €750

we're like and endangered species that insurance companys want rid of because of the boy racer image . hence the "we dont cover them" when they already have policies with lads on this very site .

I'm in the same boat as the child above :multijump
10 years older same car same company and nearly same quote

Try Axa online am sure I was able to get a quote there last time I tried

This is what I did about six months ago, I transfered my everyday policy onto my Impreza and paid the extra for the pleasure but it has been worth it. :subaru:

I had already been onto Chill.ie about starting a fresh policy on my everyday car and fair play to them they gave me a policy with a zero n.c.d. that came in at roughly €80 more than I had originally been paying Aviva on the same car with a full n.c.d. :shock2:

If I keep the Impreza I will try Chill.ie for a quote when it is due for renewal as I have a feeling that they will be cheaper than Aviva.

All that is holding me back now is the fact that I have 2 x 2l cars (one on a classic policy) and a 1.6 everyday car to tax and with the new rules and declaring them off the road and maybe having to pay €25 a couple of times per year on two cars I am seriously considering going back to 2 cars only.

Watch this space as there may be a very clean low mileage 99 Classic Turbo up for sale very soon. :icon_sad:

:falldownlaugh: ah you crack me up carlo

but yeah id try a couple of the online companys including AA.ie as thats where i got myne , best of luck

Thanks for the replies lads. Tried the wife route, same message -it's the car the system doesn't like. I even tried routing it through my mother, same deal. I would be concerned buying it and then trying to get insurance, reaction so far from the insurance companies has been so negative, I'm skeptical. That said I have only tried brokers at this point. My insurance is with RSA through a broker. Will try some of the other options mentioned here.

You dont actually have to buy it, find one you like and are considering buying, before you actually buy the car, ring up your insurance comany amd tell them you bought it and its outside, if that goes well go back and buy the car.

I'm 37 too and have about 19 years of no-claims... had couple of Scoobies insured in the past and a JCW MINI and at the time a 3.0 Audi. Got a quote for the STI from my insurer of past 7 years (AXA)... all was good till got car a few weeks later and when went in to change cover they suddenly said wouldn't cover any STI or WRX. They (local office) rang their underwritting department to see if they could make an exception given they quoted me a few weeks before and know me etc - nope, couldn't be done.

Went online... got quotes through Chill.ie and Quoteme.ie... no issue getting quotes and cover.. AND guess what... the cheapest on both was AXA!
(cheapest overall was AA, but they don't show through those two sites)

So... onto AXA website... and yep, quote and could take out insurance (and was cheaper direct on AXA site than the comparision sites). So... me back to local AXA office with print outs in hand and sure enough, one call to underwritting department later and I was insured on the STI. This was only about 4 weeks ago. My policy is due for renewal in a month and will see what the best option is, because while doing my online searching I found that AAireland.ie was way cheaper by nearly a third of the price!

I guess Nealo, what I am trying to say with the above is: a) insurance companies love being awkward, b) there are several who WILL insure you - even at reasonable €€€, c) so Don't despair, you might need to do a little surfing, but you'll get there!

Maybe transfer is your best route as they legally cant refuse as ive done this few a few times and was getting insured no bother. But if starting a new policy is a must going the way i did with my ice cream van could do it for ye, i got onto insurance ombudsman told them i had it bought, got 3 refusals in writting went to them and they got first to quote me and they had to prove it was a reasonable quote aswell

Check out quotedevil.ie.

They got me insured through Aviva on my legacy BL5.(24, 5y NCB)

Also if your getting point blank refusals, contact the Irish Insurance Federation (iif.ie). Explain your case and they'll help you out.
