Leather or suede

If you had the option of getting your steering wheel redone in leather or suede which would you go for? I have never got my hands on one of those suede/alacantra steering wheels so im just wondering how it is to drive with on a daily basis. Or would new, thicker leather be better?

Answers on a postcard

i already have a my spare steering wheel sent off over to a place to get reupholstered in whatever i decide to go with, i was in Nolan Autocare before about getting interior retrim and they (2010-ish) said the couldn't re-trim/repair steering wheels, might be worth another visit in to them. They were looking for big money to retrim my seats at the time too Someone mentioned another place to me in town along the guys but for the life of me i can't remember the name!

Very Simple.. Suede gets dirty and you cant really clean it, it can wear and go shiney in spots.
Leather you can clean, it will wear longer.
Now you choose

thats what i was thinking, Leather would be a lot easier to maintain, i dont know anyone with a suede wheel but if its anything like my boots its a lot harder to keep looking new!

You still wearing these Dan?

Sweaty hands kill sueded, remember the idea is to have matching Gloves for grip.. not bare sweaty palms

my ones are a darker blue Ken, its all the rage these days!

Probably settle on black leather with red stitching and foam padding to thicken the wheel a bit

yeah would go withthe leather myself for reasons mentioned above . aldo like the idea of "padding" to thickin it up a bit as i was in the brothers seat leon and i did like the thicker feeling steering wheel . bit more comfortable (if that makes sense !

I'm going to go for black leather with red stitching and.the foam padding for extra thickness. Most off the the after market wheels are thicker , should add that feel good factor to everyday driving and replace the worn looking yoke that's there now!

Ah your just used to holding black thick things in ur hand Dan, explains the shoe choice aswell

Leather for longevity and duration,
Suede for the best grip! - Suede wheels last longer when used with the racing gloves ;) - as there's no contact with sweat and salt off your hands, which causes the increased wear&tear

i would go for leather. Just alone you can say you got "leather" in your car, same way clarkson can say: " i got a JEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAG" ;)

Alcantara wears better than suede according to IWSTI forum.

You have material choices of Alcantara or Suede. Stitching colors include: Black, Cherry Blossom Red, Red, Blue, Yellow, White, and Silver. We pad all of our wheels as customers report that "it simply feels better in [their] hands". A slightly thicker wheel is easier to wrap your fingers/hand around, generates a bit less fatigue (so it seems) and is more pleasant for daily use. The wheels are not overly thick, think m3 steering wheel thickness for reference.

As far as wear and tear goes, Alcantara is by far the winner. It is treated from the factory to prevent UV damage. Suede, unfortunately, is not the same in this aspect. Suede, within a year, will begin to lose its color and often turn to an unsightly green. Alcantara will not. The acidity of your sweat (from your palms) and the oils of your skin are far less damaging to Alcantara than Suede (see how Suede mattes when touched over time).

What you mean "we pad all our wheels"? You work at this yea??

Dan i actually have a question for you aswell about Computery stuff :)

Yea, I thought the same, Was just going to send an order to Gonzo to treat my wheel :icon_biggrin:

guy i sent the wheel to also recommended leather, even though the alacantara was 70% more expensive and probably more profit in it
