i put the key into the door to lock the car and it wouldnt work, it wont open or close the lock, but if i turn the car key realy hard it will open all the doors except the driver door, and as soon as i release the pressure they all close again. not sure if anyone can understand that explanation, but im not sure of how else to say it. :dontknow:

do i need a new system or is there a simple way to fix it.

Could be a lock actuator problem, really need to test them with a multi-meter to be sure

this is a suggestion based on when i was installing my alarm. when i disconnected the loom for the master actuator in the drivers door it caused the same situation as you describe. the first thing i would check is the fuse for the central locking, then i would check if the loom has come out of its socket in the door, this can happen sometimes if the window or window mechanism catches the loom.
also if you have an alarm that connects to the central locking, check where the connection is made that opperates this. probably the easiest way to find this is to trace it from the alarms control unit to where it joins the wiring loom for the door actuator. the master door actuator could be knackered and as its the master if it doesnt work then the whole car is affected

where do i look to see if the loom has come out of its socket?

not sure on a impreza but in the b4 its in the bottom right corner under the door lock mechanism in between the inner and outer door skin

and what should i look for, im not the most mechanically minded as u can tell

On the GC8 Impreza the door wiring harness is one piece and plugs into everything in the door skin with block connectors. The door wiring harness runs out the end of the door at the hinge and plugs into the cars main wiring harness behind the trim panel. On the front doors the block connectors are in the driver and passenger foot wells.

Remove the door sill and kick panel on the drivers side and you'll find it beside the fuse board.

Hope this helps
