Hi Lads.

just a question, i started using e5 in my b4 yesterday. filled it up. have to say i feel i get lots more outta it. 295 kms to half tank. before with the other shite petrol i was not impressed with the consumption..
Also since i started using E5, the engine check light has started flickering, happened 3 times yesterday.. any ideas off hand?

Thats serious mpg :icon_omg: , I only get 300kms to a full tank

Is the cell light coming on and then going off again? If it is, its probably the knock sensor faulty.. Under the left of the steering column, there are 2 black connectors, connect them together, turn on the ignition (not the engine).. the check engine will start flashing, 2 long (20) and 2 short (2) flashes equals 22 which will be knock sensor..

If it counts a different number check here to find out what it is: https://isdc.ie/forum/threads/3703/

about the same like, that is, around 30mpg (9l/100km) over the last half a year or so. i noticed that milage has slightly improved (5% or so) when switched to E5, it has again improved by about same amount after the car had "hesitation remap" done. normal driving, might call it combined (city, motorway, local roads...)

i get between 320miles (520km) per tank on 95ron i use E5 sometimes, but dont use it enough to get a good test from it.

E5 in Tymon in tallaght is 129.9, the station in newbridge is 127.9, cheaper than a litre of milk. gettin 500 odd klms in Eco mode, 450 with it off.

getting 500 - 540 out of a tank
doesnt matter if its E5 or 95......
I do drive easy to get that tho!!!

i was getting that on motorway driving, and mixed between 60-70 mph. me wishes for a 6th gear :multijump:
yea the mpg would be on par with the gti golf. MINT! :smokin:

sweetcakes ill try that later on, nice one :)

According to the Maxol website you actually get less MPG when using E5 :dontknow:

One would imagine a higher octane giving a "bigger bang" should give more MPG but apparently it doesn't work that way. It's certainly better for your import scooby and the envoirnment but not for the pocket. I'll see if I can find the link.

I get 300km ish to a tank on both E5 and 95ron but it is mapped for 95ron. Think it's the gearing on the TypeR's that makes em so thirsty

i get 450 to a tank on my bugeye with mixed driving. About 350 if its more spirited driving

It's because ethanol has a lower calorific value than petrol, which means basically it produces less energy. I think the benefits people with scoobies get is because the fuel has a higher octane the ecu can advance timing, more boost which means in turn you use less revs and boost to get the same performance. so to cruise at 70 mph for example you may be at slightly lower revs than you would be on 95.
I may be wrong but that's the only explanation i think think of for better mileage with E5

I dont use E5 much cos theres not one near me but i get between 320-400km from a full tank depending on how i drive the couple of times ive used E5 its been bout the same the best ive ever gotten was over in England and it was 500km to a full tank of shell super unleaded only just made it to a garage though

The revs couldn't possibly change depending on the petrol you use.. If the wheels are spinning equating to 70mph, the gearing will set the revs as they are directly related.. You have touched on possibly the correct reason though, the higher octane means less fuel needed for same power to maintain the same speed. The control valve on the inlet doesn't need to be as far open as it would with 95octane so less fuel is needed for the smaller amount of air used.. If that makes sense..

Of course hadn't thought of that!
