No more saying it's been off the road and getting a stamp off the cops
If it's insured it has to be taxed

heard them on about this last week. it annoys me how many ppl drive around without tax and this rule wont change that. all that will happen is the genuine person who has a car off the road gets bum fcuked again. this country seems to suck so much at the moment, enforce the laws we have stop inventing new ones :angry1:

gormley and the other eco warriors behind this?

if it is off the road for long enough why not to cancel the insurance? i know, the fair system would be if the motor tax was included in the price of petrol- no disk, you just pay if you drive it...
having said that, it was a strange thing to begin with, as if they were asking people to dodge it. if it worked the way that you have to log it before, or on the time it gets off the road and it gets recorded (with the reason why), and so you do not need to pay tax, there would not be questions asked if it is genuine or not. also as a subsequent owner you would have a chance to learn more about the history of the car...

What will happen there is some insurance companies will only offer a maximum 1 month suspension or something similar. Canceling your insurance altogether could make it more difficult getting re-insured as you would be a new customer. Most insurance companies would decline to quote or quote a ridiculously high figure to a new customer especially on a performance car.

If that is the case that that one is better of to pay insurance for a car that is not driven than fair enough, let one pay- strange but practical all things considered. You could imagine that one might actually want to have it insured in case something happens to it while in storage etc. or for the reasons you have outlined....However, my point was that if you have a system (in general) that one can claim allowances retrospectively without any verification you are bound to have people taking advantage of it...It is putting it mildly very naive. Any half witted chancer, who is in arrears with motor tax, would figure this one out that he is better off to call over to the cop shop and claim he was not using the car for the period rather than pay for it...The simple thing that one has to log that the car is off the road not to have to tax it from that day onwards would sort it out- does not make a difference to a genuine person...

Whats this all about then? Got the general idea from the above comments but anyone got anything official?

My car hasn't moved out of the house since end of october, its still insured fully as its worth money compared to the daily shitter... Are you saying now that because I'm covering myself against fire or theft of the car, I have to pay tax in arrears for the period that the car hasn't left private property?

i can see lots of ducking and diving changing ownership in the log books to dodge this if it comes in.it will really effect lots of us on here as many of us wouldnt have a subaru as a daily driver.
cops may as well arrest us for driving a performance car these days.and they are still on about anyone driving a commercial van/jeep having to pay full wack private tax unless they have a vat number.
we wont know for def until 2moro but the country is gone to sh*t.

with the way the country is there would be more of this "less trust, more harshness" hurdles...remember, ~10 years back one could withdraw money out of a bank account with just giving the account number, no id whatsoever- nice if one was genuine but rather silly...remember cashing checks in a pub- gone as well...
