My DIY Service and RCM header repair/re-enforcement!

Did a bit on the Forester this morning!
I did an oil chance, drained and refilled the new oil cooler and sorted out a few little bits and peices!
I was very happy to see feck all depris on the magnetic sump bung,
last time I did an oil change, shortly after I picked her up after the turbo was sent away for repair, the bunk had load of metal shards on it, it was like a grey slimey metal/oil mix stuck to the magnet!
So very happy that ther was nothing this time!!

And I screwed my poor splitter back together! again,

Big job was the split headers,, that is they were split at the expansion joint,
They split before, they were replaced under warrenty when I first got them and then they were modified so to not happen again! (that didn't work)
So, At the last trackday, they started to get a bit noisey, and then at the night meet, I gave her a bit of welly, and the headers seemed to completely come apart,
Very noisey, smelly and worst of all, feck all boost so she was so slow!!!
And because she split when she was hot, it kinda set out of shape!
She is dew into ASD autos to get a few more finishing touches, but I couldn't put up with the feckin noise anymore, so untill Ciaran gets a chance to work his magic, this was my attempt on getting her somewhat back in shape!
It aint pretty, but it has made a world of difference,, much quieter and loads of power back where it should be, and I'm sure after a few heat cycles, they might even back back in the proper shape!

Re: My DIY RCM header repair/re-enforcement!

once it done the job and wont cause damage who cares if it temporarily looks a bit ugly

good job bodgin buddy

   :icon_redface:
I was thinking that myself!
I'm sure he will come up with something prettier, and probably that work better also!

Why not weld them? They don't have to flex there anyway :dontknow:

Cant weld them afaik due to the type of metal that is used. Once welded, it will crack within a few weeks of use..

Still can't believe you put a picture of that gunter job up on the site dan :icon_redface: :icon_redface:

Blimey Dan, crude but if it works :hjtwofinger:
Hey Stu!! Welcome along!

There does seem to be alot of flexiblity in the headers! So I can't understand way they are designed with that silly joint?
The springs are only a temperary measure, Hopefully to help pull the headers back into shape! It is only half doing the job, I think I need to get the headers really hot to get them softer to hopefully let them settle back to the proper shape, then I'd get Ciaran to do something pretty with it!

@ Sweetcakes, It was unbearable after I gave it a bit on the M50 that night with you! She was running really bad and very very smelly!
So I just used whatever I had handy!

Dan

She's only half way back in shape!
I think I need to get her really really hot to soften the metal up a bit more to let it pull back into shape!
When it's back in shape, I'll get a proper job done on her!

I have short strong clamp springs about 6 inches by 1/2 inch there winders,so you can shorten them, you can have them if you like they were off a mugen exhaust

Oooh that might be a good Idea!
I gave her an absolute roasting this evening! balls out!
I used about a quarter of a tank of petrol for a 15KM spin! It highlighted the lack of poke in the high revs (over 5,500rpm), I don't really notice in the bottom few gears
Something to address later on, maybe AVCS on the exhaust side will help with that?? In the meantime she's just a torquey beast that doesn't rev well
So she must have been pretty hot, if she hasn't settled back into shape after that, then I'll defo take you up on those clamps!
Thanks skinny!!
Where are you based, I'm near Naas!

I had a 20g on a 2.5 before and i thought that it ran out of puff around that rev Dan, that md, if as good as made out to be should pull out to the redline and beyond..
I thought AVCS only helped spool a turbo, at 5500rpm, lack of spool up isnt your problem, dont think the revvyness is the problem either.
I never found the 2.5 to be revvy, it will take around 2k spent on heads to get them to rev abit free'r. My tdo6 pulls the whole way through rev range, right to the rev limiter.

True, I don't think it's the turbo that's the problem!
I assumed it's the Cam's that is holding her back! I have AVCS on the inlet side! and that does great work on the low rev grunt!
Maybe the top end would benifit from AVCS on the other side??
Either way, I'm not going to do any more with her untill I can afford to put a new motor into her!
I don't have much confidence in the one that's in her! :icon_cry:
