NCT fail

Hi all
My Wifes 1998 mk3 2.0 GTi

failed the emissions there tonight

High idle co must be above 0.30%
The reading was 0.39

Low idle can't be above 0.50%
And the reading there was o.k. At co 0.18 vol%

I had diptane in the tank and had driven it from Dublin to the test centre in drogheda so it was well hot
Going to get it looked at but I was wondering if anyone on here would have a fair idea what it is so I knew where to start :ponder2:
Any help appreciated many thanks Colm

High idle (2780 rpm)
Lambda1.01
Co 0.39 vol%
Hc 31 ppm

That's everything there on exhaust emissions Dec
Hoping it's not the cat :icon_hang:

id still say 02 sensor as it probably hasn't been replaced in years they are supposed to be changed between 60-80k miles. if that doesn't fix it you are looking at the cat im afraid colm

Ring em up tell em you were stoped by garda (not a lie) you will get a quick test anywhere

yeah you might be right Seanie
might order a sensor anyway and try it first
but i was thinking the same
its reading o.k. there so probaly not sensor :facepalm

the lambda reading in the NCT as far as i aware is a calculation from a 5 sensor analyser, CO2, CO, O2, NOx and Hydrocarbons it has “nothing” to do with the lambda sensor fitted in the car, by nothing I mean the lambda sensor in the car could be reading anything rich or lean it should be a smooth oscillating wave around stoichiometric mixture at idle.
I am not ruling out the sensor just that it is unlikely that you would get a good lambda reading if you had an emission control problem as they would usually run way rich or lean yours is spot on.
9/10 times cat but theres always one

emailed souhans there maybe they can make a cat for it
might aswell price it up so i know
its a 1998 mk3 so its late 97 build
and i think its not available from bosal etc.
only pre 97
ill throw the sensor in and get it tested in a mates garage
and take it from there
but im not counting on it working :puke3:

I second the cat motion! I'd be very surprised if that sensor sorts those readings.

Do you want me to price a cat for you just for a big laugh!! :multijump:
I reckon you would need to rob a bank.....

get a cheap spurious one and fit it with clamps down stream from the original cat and remove after test and put back in straight piece
the old sayin, 2 cats are better than 1

Souhans rang me there
he said it looks like the cat
booked in for a magnaflow cat 190 euro
So think ill go that route first
I assume they will test it and then it will pass on there machine before I pay them :dontknow:
hopefully will work

Yeah Grahamo
sure price it up for a laugh
id guess 1300 + v.a.t. :wtf:
