I am after discovering few breather pipes missing in my engine just wondering would any of you know please have a look pics below

1)
IMG_0067.jpg

PLEASE SEE I circled them in red There is 4 pipes that are either blocked or just nothing connected at all to them

2)

This is the one that is giving me hassle as far as i understand in a sump breather that had nothing connected to it i am after putting on that pipe myself just to see if thats the problem. It keeps throwing oil out when driving then the oil hits exhaust and smoke like hell looks like the car is going to go on fire :)

Now this one here is blocked its not far from the sump breather

4)

This one here is under the right side of the intake manifold docent seem to throw any oil at all but i bet it has to be connected to something ;-)

5)

This is another pic of the sump breather that seems to be the problem cosign the smoke Its a very little loss of oil i keep checking it 5 times a day at least

Can anyone at all please tell me where do the blocked pipes and the ones that have nothing connected to them were do they connect to ???? I am not a mechanic but i know that if something needs to be connected its not the best idea to leave them like that.
Your help will be much appreciated thanks Valdas

Hey mate it looks like someone installed an oil catch can in your car and now its missing!

The pipes that throw the oil out should all be plumbed into a catch can... By default there's no catch tank and all the breathers go back into the intake manifold instead

In Subaru there are basically 3 breather pipes. 1 crankcase As on your pic no2 and two other coming from the cylinder heads. They are all plumbed together and go back to the intake manifold.
Ideally you want to install a special can with 3 inlets,
But most guys are just plumbing all 3 together and use a standard 2 port catch can which is easier to buy.

What you need to do is to plumb the breathers coming out off the engine into a catch can and then from the catch can put another pipe under the car so it could breath to atmosphere. Then empty the catch can every so often ;)
Some put the oil/water separator on the outlet from the catch can and make return to the sump.

Next thing:

I can see You have a bov installed. It's venting to the atmosphere now. Original recirc valve goes to the intake pipe which is blocked On your pic no3 as it should be

Hope that helps a little?

I was more thinking of will i just get the original hoses and hook them up the way they should be.

If i install catch can and run the pipe under the car will oil come out thru that pipe? And what do u do with the oil thats gathered in a catch can throw out or back in to the engine ???

Hey mate,

the whole idea of oil catch can is ... to catch the oil :icon_biggrin:

So you connect the breather pipe into the can, oil settles down init and the air vapours go away in the 2nd pipe which you duct somewhere under your car.

I would advise against connecting it back into intake as it was from factory... The oil vapours often contain debris. This debris will tend to accumulate inside the intake tract (oil contamination inside the boost hoses), intercooler, turbocharger, as well as be ingested into the engine during normal combusion process which can contribute to lower the octan value in your air/petrol mix and in result - will cause detonation. Needless to say, this sludge and blow-by will hurt the performance of your vehicle.

As I said you could buy the universal 2 port catch can and plumb all the three breather pipes into one.

or you could invest in the specially made for subaru - 3 port like in the link below.
