As the Impreza is coming off the road in October to be track car only I'll be looking for something as a run around. With the little mileage I do diesel not required. To put it simply Im looking for a big comfortable barge (opposite end of spectrum from Impreza)

Budget €6k
Petrol
Preferably SUV if not then must be saloon
Automatic

These are what Ive had in my head...

BMW X5 2000-2005 3 litre petrol
BMW 735i 740i 2002/3/4
BMW 728i (E38 shape)
Lexus LS430
Lexus GS300
Audi A6 3.7
Audi A8 3.7
Toyota Camry 2.4L

NO Fords, Jags, Merc, Saab, Honda, Peugot, Opel, Volvo, 5 series, 3 series

So over to you guys for suggestions or opinions on above.....

Strange list.. a 2.4 Camry and no Mercs? Mercs are the king of barges

Have a look at this I test drove one of these they are magic..panrarmic roof the works

And missing out the E39 5 series? The 540i is a lovely car I had use of one and so comfortable...nice power...what it has overs the 7401 is a bit of handling if you need it

From Your list 740i the 735i has known issues with the nikasil cylinder bores wearing.

All are great cars, especially for someone who doesn't bother to tax them!

lexus ls430 my choice off the list
trouble free motoring
plenty off comfort and poke
id say a lot off the others on the list would have exspensive and regular repairs
except the camry

Thanks for the replies guys.

Nothing about a Merc appeals to me at all. Besides I'm only 33. Bit early to be considering a Merc.

The Audi S4 4.2 V8 is nice but its a wagon. I have no need for a wagon. Also it needs a gearbox. I want to avoid buying something I cant just turn a key in and drive.

Swaying towards the X5. Petrol ones seem to go a lot cheaper than the diesel ones. There are also a lot of diesel X5s on donedeal. Why? people get rid because problematic? I know there is a swirl flap issue there with diesel BMWs.

What about this?

defo go classic
but buy something in the u.k.
and bring it over
you wont have much to pay on a 30+ year car 200 euro
but better selection in u.k.
even if not yank buy something cool
it will go up in value too
just spend the extra and get a decent one with the work done
so much to choose from

http://www.classiccarsireland.eu/the_benefits.asp

you could get a seriously cool machine that wouldnt cost much to maintain
just the juice
and with your low miles it wouldnt matter

You can't get anymore granddad than a lexus!! and a Camry? just get some tan slacks while your at it....X5's are shite..Keith owned one ask him what he thought..jeeps are completely pointless...the 3.7 Audis wouldn't pull you out of bed they are horribly dull..I went and looked about 15-20 barges over the last few months..S8 is a nice bus only big AUdi Id consiedr but they chew the auto box.big repair bills....the 3.7 is just a snooze fest.

If your ruling out mercs this all day long..Audis cant compare

V12 enough said...but you get a late 2000 model over here for 2k not sure what VRT would cost ya

Old mercs are cool ..set of amg wheels they look the business..

Out of the cars on your list I've driven 728i E38 and Lexus LS400

728i is a great car overall and the engine doesn't feel underpowered even though its only 192bhp or thereabouts, tiptronic box works superb in them but overall reliability can be the problem

Lexus LS400 is some machine, I've owned 1989 Jap import version and absolutely loved it, 1UZ engines are brilliant with bags of torque at any revs, auto gearbox lets them only rev to 4500rpm where redline is more like 6000rpm

Would you consider Nissan Murano? SUV with 350z engine and great looks! Be more reliable than any bmw x5 as well!

This is good stuff guys keep it coming.

That 750L 5.4litre I've had my eye on for awhile. Its been for sale for about 9 months now. I guess the 5.4 litre puts people off. A good cash offer would have it at a cheaper price.

The 540i is back on the table as I quite like the idea of a V8

The Murano and the SC430 are ugly looking things and the phaeton is a VW.

Bit higher than budget, but for the ultimate luxury barge... http://www.carzone.ie/search/Bentley/Turbo-R/201318214730316/advert?channel=CARS - all you'll need is a turban and a few hours in your local sun-studio to work on that tan :falldownlaugh:

But... lads dare I say it... http://www.carzone.ie/search/Subaru/Legacy/3.0-R-Sp/201330217322423/advert?channel=CARS ... if I hadn't just got my Hawk, might have been tempted... a lot of car there for the money and with it private sale and 3.0 petrol not really shift probably could get it very near your budget.

BTW, I drove a Phaeton for a couple of months while working abroad --- they are VERY impressive... reliable, very comfortable and well above anything you might expect from VW and puts A8 limo to shame. Pitty it's only the small engined one... One I drove was W12 :icon_pray:

Drove a Merc C55 AMG of a mate a few years back and believe me, it's no Aul' fella's run-around... proper power, luxury and even looks good (his was candy white with smoked lights, tinted windows etc... very tasty).

How much is the V12 to tax in Ireland now?

I know Phaeton is only VW, but I would have it over anything else in its class... Its unique and according to tests and reviews... its much better than limos from BMW, Audi and Mercedes. Even J.Clarkson said he would prefer one over S-class.
Its defo a future classic as well

Subaru Forester--AWD,cheaper on tax than others on list
Audi Allroad--Space,comfort and quattro for winter
Chrysler300--huge depreciation, so good buy
Hummer H3--Big and makes a statement
Lexus RX400h-- Luxury,easy to drive.

I would avoid BMW as they have turbo and gearbox issues aside from flaps.
Big Audis also a nono if you drive country roads. Too many briars will scratch the sh%t out of the paint. The same can be said for all big cars really. Happy hunting.
