New car options, what would you buy?

IMO if you look at it and try to be realistic... There is no performance car going to suit you... Being mpg conscious and performance car don't go hand in hand.

The point I tried to get across above is that nearly all performance cars could achieve 30 mpg if driven very very lightly and economical ... But really it's a bad criteria to be trying to search for a car with. The minute who up the pace in any of these cars the 30mpg goes out the window... Now ask yourself are you going to be able to pussy a performance car around without giving it a blast??

One thing I have never ever considerd when buying a performance car is it mpg.... Being honest I think it's a bit of a contradiction..

Perhaps you would be happy with a sporty looking car, say like an is 220 or Mazda 6 etc etc...

Be carefull with the mpg figures given aswell... A mate of mine had an mr2 non turbo and then a turbo and he said they were basically the same on mpg

Ya don't get me wrong, I have no problem with mpg dropping down when driven on, and I'm perfectly happy if a car will do 30mpg driven normally. But nearly anyone I speak to will say that a Subaru will do the same mpg if driven hard as driven easy... So my question was will it do 30mpg driven normally. Iv never minded paying for a tank of petrol for a good blast.

I had a 2004 UK Blob eye WRX for two years. My drive is 60km each way of which about 40kms is on Wicklow Miltary roads across steep hills... so, twisty, hilly roads without gatso vans, so would drive her on without abusing her... and I would return about 30-32mpg each and every tank. If I'd be going to the airport I am on better flat roads and would see 32-34mpg as the best economy figures on that car.

Best performance car on juice I had was a 2008 MINI JCW - 220Bhp, 0-62mph in 6.5 seconds and average 35-36mpg for the same journey and 38-40mpg if doing the airport runs on the better flat roads... BTW... only the R56 turbo model runs that cheap as the older charger JCW are very thirsty indeed.

To put into context, I got an A4 estate Quattro 3.0tdi after that, an automatic, and that has about same mpg as the MINI, maybe a little better on the longer flat trips.

My current 2.5 STI Hawk on the other hand is a petroholic and does about 23-24mpg on the same run, same driver... and only about 25mpg on airport runs if driven well easy... once on a cross country run on the motorway to Limerick and back she returned just short of 27mpg running everything at between 60-70mph... so if petrol consumption is a concern - don't get a 2.5 STI

my old legacy bl5 would do near enough 30mpg going to work would never drop below low 20s i would get 400-450 kms from a tank without fuel light coming on... skoda vrs 2.0 TFSI are a good car or GTI as you mentioned or a cupra r seat would see above 30mpg all day long

I just think it's not an ideal criteria to be looking for a performance car with.. And I don't think you are going to do yourself justice in what you end up getting.

Thanks keadeen, if ur happy u could get 30-32mpg I'm happy with that! I always had 22-25mpg at best in my head! And had the vrs 2.0tfsi before. And ya I loved it, but not buying the same car again....

So, anyone selling a 2004 a 2005 uk or Irish blob eye??? :) :subaru:

It's not the only criteria I'm using, but it's still something that needs to be considered! I'd be a fool to buy a car like that without first inquiring about it, especially when I have little experience with them. I'm perfectly happy with 30mpg but never thought an Impreza would do that.

That would be about right for an STI 2.0.
The WRX 2.0 when stock and well maintained does the figures I wrote earlier. Once tuned they can be a bit more thristy.

FYI, I had a '96 JDM STI v3 2.0 which returned about 28-30mpg on my daily commute run if driven normally, and about 25mpg if driven harder.

But I wouldn't go out and buy a car on the hope or promise it will do x amount to the gallon... You will end up obsessd free wheeling down hills to try get the 30mpg... Lol...

Forget about mpg... All the usual performance cars will all be around the same...
So...
Buy a car you like... Don't worry about the mpg...
Treat yourself, if it does 30mpg great if it does 25mpg so what... Buy something you like and want... Treat yourself.... Life is a one way street man... You ain't coming back.

Ha ha! Well said Ken! Must get the wife to ring you! Or actually, ill wait till she gets the Topaz fuel card bill, then ill get her to ring you and u can tell her bout the one way street! :angry1: lol

But ya, I intend to treat myself! Have been driving a diesel way too long, akthought it was a 175bhp mondeo which I loved, it's time to return to petrol power!

Be a shame to have the mpg thing ruin or dictate the way you have to drive the car... With regards the woman... You need to hit her really really hard the first time...that should put a stop to that .... If you don't do it hard the first time your gonna find your self slapping the head off her every week... And that's time consuming

I've a bit if experance with that Vvtli engine in the t sport Celica ur looking at my dad has the corolla t sport in quick silver (that lovely grey) since 2004 totally reliable and if driven very easy can crack high 40s mpg best he saw was 50 mpg stick it into the high lift all the time it's a differbt matter so to conclude with ur budget and as u have a subaru already I'd not buy the Celica I'd buy the corolla (one below)far more useable day to day if possible buy the compressor (supercharged) rare car here last of the t sport corollas light pressure supercharger giving 225 Bhp rather than the na 189 Bhp

Spot on. Horsepower requires petrol..it's that simple. You need to be looking at the new turbo performance cars..M135i, A45 AMG, S3 to get good economy and power but even then its relative....on the throttle they will still use lots of juice

Well iv made my mind up, going with the Impreza! Fook it! And I have the wife's blessing so no need fur the beating ken! :)

So on a serious note, I'm on the look out for a mint 2004 to 2006 Irish or UK spec WRX. And would prefer handy milage too. And think it has to be Subaru blue! :scoobyblue_1:
