New motor tax and VRT regime.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The new system is applicable only to cars bought here new or imported (new or second hand) after 01/07/2008. It doesn't affect cars currently registered in Ireland

Motor tax:

Band A (<=120 grams per km) - €100
Band B (121-140 grams perkm) - €150
Band C (141-155 grams per km) - €290
Band D (156-170 grams per km) - €430
Band E (171-190 grams per km) - €600
Band F (191-225 grams per km) - €1,000
Band G (>225 grams per km) - €2,000

VRT:

Band A (<=120 grams per km) - 14%
Band B (121-140 grams perkm) - 16%
Band C (141-155 grams per km) - 20%
Band D (156-170 grams per km) - 24%
Band E (171-190 grams per km) - 28%
Band F (191-225 grams per km) - 32%
Band G (>225 grams per km) - 36%

Hello Dave,

As the new WRX is over 225g/km the new STI is in the same boat too

So if you are looking to buy..... do so before July

€2K motor tax per year

I don't think so

Cheers,

Michael

Hello Brian,

Cars registered before 07-2008, have had a motor tax increase of approx 9.5% this Feb

Other than this there has been no increases published

It would be very unfair of the government to retrospectively tax all cars on the C02 emissions..... considering the consumer may have made a different choice in their car selection if they knew this tax system was going to be introduced

They did not implement the new tax / vrt laws immediately to allow dealers sell their stock etc

A bit of lobbying from the SIMI I think :dunno:

Cheers,

Michael

Hello Brian,

Its not to say it will never be introduced retrospectievely.......

It may depend on how short Brian Cowen is this year :D

I think the current Irish stock should be safe, with the government implementing this new CO2 regime from 2008

Cheers,

Michael
PS This should stop a lot of secondhand imports, as well as keeping the pre-registered 07-08 values up

well a june registered evo or scooby will be worth a few grand more than a july reg'ed one

Hello Smokey,

It should, but this may take some time to filter in

Cheers,

Michael

Nice one Dave. This thread should be a STICKY as Im sure more and more questions are going to be asked about this in the coming months.

yea i think import places are up the creek .was talking to a local importer and hes going to sell all his stock and is just going to concentrate on parts. some of the bigger importers could take a risk and pre reigester a good load but its not looking good for the import scene shame really :subaru:

I think its unfair on us normal folk. Its making that gap between rich and not so rich bigger again.
Paying 2k a year tax wont bother those with money yet would make it impossible for some of us to continue our hobbies of owning powerful cars.
On the other hand, is it going to be possible to map a car such as a Subaru to run on E85, therefore lowering performance cars into an acceptable Co2 bracket? :subaru:

Hello Matt,

The measured C02 emissions, will be measured from factory output

waste of money 2000 euro for tax, and the condition of the roads
[/quote]

Completely agree Mark, but the funds gained from road tax aren't necessarily going to be used for the roads (like they ever were anyway!!!)

The idea of the new tax bands are ultimately to get us to think about what new cars we buy, to choose lower emission cars. Our mickey mouse government have signed up to this Kyoto agreement which means they have made a commitment to lower our emissions. Basically theres not a chance of reaching our targets for this so they're just penalising motorists again, we are going to fund the penalties imposed under Kyoto agreement.

They should focus on the cows, tax farmers for allowing their cows to fart/sh!te
