AutoSport - Ireland to miss out on 2011 WRC slot[/url]"]
Rally Ireland looks certain to miss out on a 2011 World Rally Championship calendar slot after Motorsport Ireland confirmed its event was not on the proposed schedule.

WRC promoter North One Sport presented its 2011 calendar proposal to the WRC Commission yesterday.

A Motorsport Ireland statement read: "Motorsport Ireland have been advised by North One Sport, the global promoters of the WRC, that Rally Ireland has not been included in their 2011 calendar proposal to the FIA. The proposal will be considered by the FIA World Council at their meeting in March.

"Motorsport Ireland had presented North One Sport with a detailed plan for the 2011 event at a meeting in London in September 2009. FIA president, Jean Todt, has made it clear that the FIA will control the calendar for each championship but a strong geographical spread is necessary for world championships.

"Rally Ireland will continue to participate as a partner in the World Rally Organisers Group with a view to capitalising on any opportunities that may arise."

Rally Ireland has run twice in the WRC, once in 2007 and then as the opening round in 2009.

The event's finances had recently come under scrutiny with reports that the rally made a substantial financial loss last season. There were also doubts about where the event would be based after the town of Sligo proved both expensive and unpopular with competitors and rally fans alike.

Ouch! :icon_redface:

bad news but the bit in the last line about sligo being both expensive and unpopular with competitors and fans alike ... thats news to me

I read an article about rally ireland, and how seb loeb, hirvonen, jari matty all said that it was one of the best events that they have taken part in, as the roads are so unpredictable between wet and dry,.....its always slippy. and its one of the best events they have ever taken part in.......... it was also on WRC on dave.
So news to me as i thought they liked the area and rally.

the rally drivers loved it, the complaints were from the spectators that went there getting ripped off for everything .i was there both times myself with the family and had a great time rented a house down there for the week .hope it comes back soon.

That sucks... I was there last year and loved it. Really shud hav been in kilarney cork area tho or the midlands somewhere.

The reason for sligo. was because its so close to enniskillen, so it was an ire and NI rally. It will never go south of dublin, or roscommon, draw a line accross. its rally ireland so some stages have to be up north.

i dunno what they are one about , i was in sligo on the saturday night for the 2007 rally , had the night of me life ,
sligo is a serious spot to go out in, the craic was mighty , and pints were flowing ...

what more could ya want , although sleeping in a swb land cruiser didnt help me any ....

would have been there last year too , but i was laid up after being in an industrial accident just before it ...

Yeah but won't be wrc cars & the powers that be want to bring it over to Dublin which is just plain stupid.

we have some of the finest tarmac stages in the south of ireland
so why the based it up around sligo is beyond me, and now with the recession im sure
there would be better value to be had with regards to accomadation and food etc,
we as a country have to make an impression on people who come here wherther it be to watch a sporting
event or just a holliday its not good getting on your plane to go home and your abiding memeory of your
stay was how expensive everything was.
