noisey pulley

since yesterday ive noticed a noise comming from the front of the engine. it sounds like the whine you would get from a gearbox. if its fine 2morrow im goin to strip back the covers and have a look. has anyone come across this before and if i can tell what pulley it is can i spray wd 40 or put some greese on it . do these pullys have bearings and if so are they hard to replace. i plan to take a few pics so that might help too. everything is fine performance wise and what gauges i have are normal, im thinkin and hoping its a tensioner and not a main pulley.

Does it happen when your turning?

I had a whine coming from the front when turning and it turned out to be air in the power steering system, just needed to be bled. open the reservoir when the engine is running and warm, turn the steering slowly left and right for about 5 mins.

no its not the p/s pump, but is similar to that noise. when i had the bonnet open earlieri could hear it clearly but couldnt get to it cause of the pulley cover.

:ponder: Not sure then, I bet someone in the morning and they'll tell ya what it is.

had a look this mornin but i cant identify which on it is, there is a black cover which i thing encloses the timing belt that i cant get at and im hoping its the tensioner behind there. this seems to be perfect timing(pardon the pun) but my timing belt is nearly due a change. can anyone tell me what ied expect to pay for the belt and pulleys to be done on my b4 and how long it takes.
on a differant note i took of the intercooler and too my surprise there was gunk and oiley resedue in it and the pipework, i gave it and the three hoses that go to the solinoids a good cleaning along with the acuator. had a good look around the engine bay and gave those imposable to reach areas a good clean.
is this normal to have oil around there and would a catch tank do the job in this instance. i would like to take off the inlet manifold and give the inside of it a clean but it might be beyond my capabilities.

think the belt replacement will be in the 400 region mick!!!!
that noise should not be neglected mate...it could be a warning of something bout to seize up!!!

:ponder2: :ponder2:

ive came across a few a/c pumps noisy.... the bearings might be on the way out... even when the a/c off the pulley wheel will be spining... just a thought might help

ill have to get someone to have a look at it. i work in finglas and live in rush so im thinkin about lusk motors or my neighbour recomended a mechanic around skerries to me recently, i think he does the work for s&b motors. i dont think any of te traders are easy for me to get too on the way to work and does anyone know do lusk give out courtesy cars.

There's a mechanic in Donabate, directly behind the Lusk group garage. Called GC Auto Services. The mechanic is called Greg. He's sound. Ive Had work done on my van and old car up there and he's cheap enough too.
One of the lads that works for him drives an Impreza Sti so should know what he's lookin at

could be the idler tensioner on t belt, if you loosen the alt belt, power steering belt and or take it off, if noise is still there this will immediatly eliminate . a/c, power steering, altenator.
on your oil in pipework question, this a common thing and main causer is the crank breather. you have 3 breathers to do away wih on a classic, one one each rocker cover and crank breather at back of engine kinda under throttle body, you can pipe all these to a catch can or just out to the ground, but make sure to block off all places where these breathers were piped ito your inlet pipe, think there 2 or 3 places? Oil and vapour getting into combustion cylinder is a major killer of octane, so this is a good safety mod.

thanks for the info matt....the car was serviced by north county motors, p moore is on the sticker. i think s&b use him for all there cars. ill have to ring around a few places to get a ball park figure. ied like to use someone off the site but the only one thats local is lusk motors.

@kenc......is it posible to run the engine with these belts disconnected???? there are 2 belts at the top of the engine one to the altenator and one to what i think is the ac.
i would be confident enough to fit the catch tank but ied have to be sure of which pipes to use. i couldnt tell where the oil was coming from but it was in the intercooler pipes and some residue in the intercooler itself. also the rubber air hoses going from the solnoid box to the intercooler pipes had some residue in them, so it would be advisable i think to clean the solinoids that where connected to these pipes.
i learned alot today just by taking off the intercooler, it took ages but i took the time to mark everything and treble checked everything, its not worth trying to fix something while breaking something else

The 2 belts at the top of the engine are: Alternator/Power steering on the left and AC on the right.

If you remove these belts you can still start the car and it will drive but the battery will be discharging because the alternator is disconnected so don't go far and obviously the steering will be heavy without power steering.

Never fitted a catch tank so can't really comment on that

i was think today how difficult it would be to remove these belts.......i was thinkin of using tippex to mark the position of the tensioners. i wouldnt have to drive to hear the noise so no fear of the car goin dead.

Well both belts are very easy to remove and install. No need to mark the position of the tensioner just feel the belts and adjust them to about that tension when installing. if they lose then tighten them up.

Anyway they both have adjuster nuts on the tensioners, think its a 12mm nut. you'll have to loosen the bolt under the alternator as it rotates on this as you tighten/loosen.The ac has a similar set up just loosen the bolt on the tensioner wheel then loosen the adjuster as the ac pump does not rotate.

Ive a catch tank fitted for probably 10,000km now and i cant say how it helps performance wise but it does catch residue so is obviously working.
Its not massive amounts of oil but probably in the region of 50 to 100ml over the length of time i have it installed.
If your at the agm tomorrow you can have a look at how mine is connected up.

The oil you have in the intercooler is normal as long as its not excessive... My B4 is exactly the same and i was told that its normal for these yokes...

Lusk motor group did my timing belt a while back and havent had any problems with it. Peter did me a very good price too.

right.......took off the belts to the power steering, altenator and a/c and started up the engine and no noise what so ever
then i reconnected the belt on the a/c as it has to go on first and still no noise. then reconected the belts to the p/s and alt and the noise is there.
now im thinkin its either one of those two or they are puttin stress on the main pulley off the engine. what i did notice also is when the a/c is off the constant pulley is spinning fine but when the a/c is on the unit looks like its stuck and the belt is slipping, could this be the cause of the noise?
what i might do is disconnect the a/c completely and re-attach the other belt and see what the crack is........any suggestions welcome and thanks for the info so far.

Was this before or after you removed them?
it is near impossible to diagnose problem without having car in front of you and even then it could be a trial and error situation, the belt could be either too loose or too tight, if it too loose when you turn on a/c and pressure comes on the belt could start to slip and be fine when a/c off, too tight of belt will make a noise aswell, it could be the slipper clutch system inside pulley of aircon that is fooling your eye either, if it slipping you will get a smell of rubber burning,
When you have belt on you want it tight but not that there no give in it, there is no exact measurement for this only experience im afraid but this might be a guide, when you have it tensioned up, catch the belt and you should be able to twist it a bit, not a full 180 degress , but just say belt is in the 9pm 3pm position on a clock, maybe twist it to say 10pm 4pm... hope that doesnt sound too stupid but only way i can think of explaining.
I havnt seen a standard car for a while but isnt there a real flimsey idoler tensioner that looks like it belongs on a bicycle or an EVO :icon_lol: that kinda hangs down on a long adjusting bar in front of timming cover, ive heard of these breaking or giving trouble.
You cant do any damage with belts off, so try experiment when putting them back on, spin the pullies by hand if you can and see is there roughness or noise, and check condition of belts, are the gone shiney, hard, cracked???
When you use a catch can, you will stop all that shite and vapour getting into engine, have a look around the butterfly in throttle body and see whats built up around it, the vapour and oil that comes from breathers is piped into inlet pipe, goes into compressor side of turbo, is pused through intercooler, in through throttle body, in around your inlet manifold and down into cylinders and burnt, it is noted that the vapour and oil will weaken octane in petrol, and tarnish internals of engines, and put a coating on them, ANDYFORRESTPERFORMANCE.CO.UK, Andy recomends it too, and points out reasons for it i think,
there is a bit of messing around with pipes to be done and you may have to buy some piping, T joints, reducers etc, but you wont know what to get till you go at it, there is no set way off doing it, just whatever way suits you and is handiest for you, you probably wont get blanks or stoppers so main thing is when you are blocking the ways into the inlet pipe, make sure to use something that has a head on it and cant fall or be sucked in, somethong like a bolt etc, have a look around and maybe there a scooby specific catch can and fitting kit available from a company, it may be more exp to buy but at least you will have everything and mayb even instructions

thanks ken for the detailed reply. i gave the belts a quick twist to see how much they moved and also you can see on the bolts where there previous position was so im happy the belts and tensioners are where they should be. on the a/c the clutch pully is movin ok untill the aircon is switched on, then when the clutch engages its stopping both the clutch and the centre pulley on the a/c and the belt is slipping at this point. ive now takin the a/c belt off as i dont want to damage it or the other pulley. im goin to take them off at lunch tomorrow and have a closer look. does the main pulley which drives the belt come straight off the crank and if so does this have an oil seal and a bearing, i cant see behind it cause its too close to the timing cover. im tryin to find a diagram that shows the timing pulleys and where the oil seals are aswell as the bearings.
