noisey pulley

main pulley on crank doesnt have a bearing, it is fixes to crank and rotates at same pace, it must be your aircon that is causing noise then? my aircon is removed ans car not standard but i think aircon is only thing driven with that belt, so remove it b fokd and weat a tshirt  it cannot be your crank pully making noise its someting that belt is either driving or passing over, by the by never judge tension by previous marks as belts stretch

as i said the a/c belt is removed so its not causing the noise, but i do believe there is a problem with it. ill reconect the a/c at lunch tomorrow and take a short vid. it has to be the p/s pump or the altenator. i cant tell which one it is cause i cant drive one without the other. heres a silly question but the shaft that the main pulley is connected to does it power anything behind the timing cover. and is the main pulley shaft separate to the one the sproket that the timing belt is powered by.

sorry mick,
read the post wrong!!!!
there is a toothed gear behind the cover on the crankshaft that holds the timing belt !!!!

right.....a bit of an update, i put back on the a/c belt today and tightened it up and its working ok, i didnt tighten it yesterday fully and the belt was slipping. when i had all the belts off i checked for movement in the pulleys and the only one that has movement is the altenator. its not much but when the belt is tightened on it i reckon its catching on the inside.
can i get these reconditioned or will i need a replacement. i have a diagram of the altenator and it shows a bearing, can i get this bearing from subaru? or does anyone have an altenator buy or use to check if this is my problem.

I have a reconditioned alternator there if ya wanna try it and see

cheers lad, will it fit a b4 and if so how do i get it off ye. there is a guy in rush near me that reconditions them and starters so if it is the altenator ill drop it into him and keep it as a spare. if it fits and yer sellin it how much are you looking for?

Dunno if it'll fit a B4, its out of a classic Impreza. Didn't actually think about selling it was just offering to see if thats your problem. It cost me over a €100 to get reconditioned but dunno how much I'd want for it.

It hasn't been used since the recon, I got one to do me while it was gettin done and just never fitted it when i got it back.

well if i can find out if it fits ied appreciate a lend of it while i get mine sorted.

No bother at all mate, If its too expensive to get yours recon'd then we'll come to some arrangement

thanks again scoobymaniac, pity it didnt suit but atleast i know now that a classic altenator wont fit a b4. ill have to find someone in finglas who can recondition my one and have it back to me in the same day as i need the car to pick up the baby in the evenings. it took me all of about 4 minutes to switch out the alternator, so even though it didnt work between that and the belts i learned a lot. karma sent

i wouldnt think you will get a same day turn over tbh. The main cause of bearings going in altenator or any pully driven mechanism is either real big big miles or more likely over tensioned belts, a belt that has no slack will fook up bearings fairly rapid.. be careful wen you tensionung up

When I got mine done in miles balfe it was done in less than a day,

Dropped it in at 8:30, picked it up at 4ish. It was expensive but ya got 12 months warranty with it so.......

cheers lads......ill put an enquirery up on the site for one. it makes it difficult to get it done without a temp replacement cause i depend on the car.
